How do you know that the employees won't be paid?
Our NYC office was closed for a while after 9/11 and then the year we had the big storm we were closed for about a week or so.
We all got paid during both instances. (our salaries were direct-deposit)

@Mint2 Unfortunately, through the end of the year is less than two weeks from the date of the fire. I hope they will change their mind and extend that time.

FYI. I read on one of the news casts that QVC said they would pay empoyees their normal salary until the end of the month.

I don't think Depglass meant any ill will or contentiousness.
I am happy to read that they will continue to get paid. Good on the company for that!
@chickenbutt @depglass I don't think so either. If she hadn't mentioned the swizzle sticks, most would have felt she was just sharing compassionate holiday sentiments for the workers/staff.
But, In spite of this corporate tragedy, people's orders are still important to them. It was just a negative choice of wording on her part upsetting others. I firmly believe she meant well and should get a break.

They can collect unemployment.

Even if the employees file for unemployment, they won't receive it anytime soon, if ever.
There should be no problem with them collecting UI but they can't file until they're off the payroll, whenever that might be. It usually takes 2-3 weeks for them to start receiving benefits.

@Qcloudy, 12 days. They are all heart aren't they?
@tiny 2 Corporation pay a hefty tax on employee wages through the Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) so they'll have unemployment insurance to help with expenses when they lose jobs through no fault of their own. It's not like they're not contributing. Most retail businesses do not have bottomless pockets.
