I have a very limited fixed income and live in low-income housing. A new neighbor moved in next door. When I went and introduced myself, she told me she barely had anything, including food. I sorted through my things and gave her some things I don't use anymore. These were things I was planning on selling for a little extra money. I also went through my pantry and gave her quite a lot of nonperishable food. A few days later, I was going into my apartment just as she was coming down the hall. She was carrying a transparent plastic grocery bag (new and not wrinkled), and the only items in it were 3 cartons of cigarettes. It does not sit well with me that she can't afford food, but has money for lots of cigarettes. I used to be a smoker, so I know what the addiction is like. I am feeling that I may not be so generous anymore as she has "money to burn".
