Alternatives to an Invisible Fence?

We adopted a beautiful avg size Labradoodle. Bailey is about 15 weeks and 12 lbs. He will grow to 25-30 lbs. We live on 5 acres in the country, and so far take him out on a lease or let him run with us in site. He stays with us, but concerned about him running away or get lost in the woods. I am concerned about comments about the invisible fence having a strong shock. How much territory does the fence cover? We don't really want a fence thatneeds to be mowed around.
