Re: Alternative (car) Shifters?

"Shifter"?  Are we talking about a manual transmission?  I learned back in the 1970s and it wasn't for me.  My mother learned to drive when we were kids in a Corvair that was a stick (manual) shift.  I only remember that since she kept jerking the car!

I can only drive automatic today.  It doesn't matter if it's a stick on the side of my seat or if there are buttons......as long as it's not a manual!  LOL!

A "manual" is a LOT easier to drive in SNOW!    di

Re: Alternative (car) Shifters?

My automatic Forester has a "manual" mode where you flip the console shifter to the side and use the paddle shifters on the steering wheel to control engine speed.  Very useful on my snowy/icy mountain pass commute when heading downhill to one of the many 30-mph corners where brakes might not be the best choice for success.

I can do all that without looking for a button on the dash.

I miss driving a manual transmission.  Every once in awhile I have to drive our pickup just to get my "fix", but it's not very quick off the line.  Woman LOLWoman Wink

Re: Alternative (car) Shifters?

Our new vehicle has the 'dial' instead of a shifter, DH does not mind it but he misses having the shifter to rest his hand on when driving. The VW EOS and the Jeep Wrangler are both regular shifters.

@WRXtoo Our Outback had that as well, it came in handy more than once on our private road.

I learned to drive on a standard (3 on the tree!) Falcon, and we have often had standards-loved our 6-speed Mini-Cooper-that car flew!

My favorite vehicle was my '68 Dodge Dart, 383 4-barrel. What a fun car!

Our 2024 Mazda CR 3 has a shifter

Thanks.  I think this will be the first car purchase without my dad.  Because of my husband's work schedule, it was never easy for him to car shop so dad and I would do the leg work and then DH would look at my choices.  I'm 90% sure this is the car I want (since the Edge isn't available).  It will be a few weeks till we will be able to test drive one.

I think this was my brother's and my first vehicle LOL  I got my license in 1975 and this is a 1965 Ford Farm and Ranch Speical.  No AC.  Shifter on the steering wheel column, manual transmission.  I wish I could ask dad WHY.  What was his rationale to put us in this truck??  Safety maybe?  A lesson?  I'll never forget the time Frank and I were on our way home from school.  We were almost home and a hornet flew in the window of the truck.  I'm deathly afraid of any insect that wants me dead.  I started screaming, flailing my arms and stomping my feet on the gas and brake.  It's a good thing we were on a small country road.  I think I got us stopped before landing in the ditch.  Ahh, memories Smiley Happy

I'm not excited about the idea of piano keys but from what I've read, it's not a big deal and people get used to them in a day.  Traditional shifters are a thing of the past.

You don't shift an automatic for driving down the road.  The piano keys are used just as you would the shifter in a traditional auto transmission.

Based on what I've read, "shifting" with the keys becomes second nature and you don't have to look at them.
