All my other dogs have been overweight.

Now I have a new dog, 2-3 yrs old. She's just the right weight. On the bag of dog food it says if she weighs 40 lbs she should get 2 1/2-3 cups of food. I feel so sorry for her cause she eats it all & keeps going back & licking her dish. I don't want her to be overweight too. I tried giving her some green beans & she spit them out. What should I do?
