It's extremely, extremely rare for a gun to just "go off". There should be some failsafe system where the person with the gun must check the ammunition before even aiming let alone firing. But it's all been said and money talks.. you know what walks.

He did not pick up the gun. It was handed to him and told it was safe. Actors do not check guns. He either didn't pull the trigger or has no memory of doing so. No one would under those traumatic circumstances.

I agree more important is who loaded the gun with real ammo, that is the real question, no way would Baldwin have known that and pulled the trigger. And why would he have checked the gun that was the job of the person who handed it to him.
