I watch all those shows. Much more interesting that watching the pretentious screaming housewives.

Buying Alaska seldom shows any homes inside city limits.

It is so beautiful there, I guess that is why people take the risk.
I can't imagine living somewhere that it's necessary to take a plane ride just to buy groceries or see a doctor. But I admire people who do it for the incredible beauty of the wilderness. I watch the HGTV real estate Alaska show occasionally and am always filled with admiration for the courage of the settlers (who are often paying top dollar) as well as the extraordinary landscape they will have every day they live there.
It's not for me, but I'm an ex New Yorker who even after years of home ownership would rather phone down to the building super to come up and fix things. I don't like hunting or fishing either. But I totally enjoy how gorgeous that amazing state is.

On 4/11/2014 HappyAndIKnowIt From NY said:I'm curious about the woman who lives alone at a outpost. When she is caught in a blizzard or stalked by animals isn't there a team of camara men and or women around filming her every move? Just how alone is she?
Yes, there is a film crew with her at times but mostly she is alone. There was no film crew there the night a bear tried to come in right where her head was, while she was sleeping. She apparently has been at this place a long time as an overseer and recently bought it. She lives in a quansot hut shaped tent, not a substantial building. She fascinates me because I can relate to her. She does all the maintenance at this place.
I forgot to mention the program about the Alaska State Railroad, which people hail to get a ride into town for supplies.
Love Roses, I'm not into jade but I'm really fascinated by Alaska like so many others.

There are parts of Alaska that are pristine, raw, natural wilderness....so far. I wouldn't mind visiting that state, but I wouldn't want to live there. My lifelong friend with whom I grew up, lived there for over 25 years. When her husband retired, they left as fast as they could and returned to Washington. There is a very high statistic of alcoholism there, and the system is very corrupt. It is an attractive place for interesting quirky to just plain weird people to settle, which makes it unusual and fascinating and sometimes a little creepy. But it also has the normal urban centers as well as small villages. As I said, it would be a nice place to visit and soak up culture, but perhaps not to live.
