Based on the information given, the money saved will only be a very small amount. I personally would not give up the onvenience of a second car for that small amount of money. Rather than think about what I would save if I got rid of the older car, I would also be giving thought to what I'm going to do if I trade my current cars for a new one, then realize we really do need that second car. My husband and I have long learned over the last 41 years that we are a two car household.

Hi bonnielu,
I've not read any of the responses, which may place me at a disadvantage in this instance. However, when DH and I retired I was the one who insisted that we ditched the second car. My reasons: insurance $$, cost to replace tires, damage to undercarriage during winter over successive winters, annual registration fee(s), cost of getting the car "smogged," etc. Of course, all of this goes out the window, if you have a humongous pension plan and plenty of bucks to spend.
Our former neighbors (we just moved) did a wonderful thing with the "new" space in their garage when they sold their 2nd car. Her husband built the most wonderful pantry for her with all kinds of compartments and he also made himself an extended workbench (he likes to work on his current project, which is an old Chevy in the driveway under a very stable canopy). That new space would be the most loveliest thing to have!!!

@bonnielu Both hubby n I are retired n we experienced the same concern. We sold 2nd car 6 months ago and we haven't regretted it at all.
We pretty much travel together the same as you. A couple of times there has been a conflict ...I was going to schedule a hair appointment and he had an appointment already scheduled. So.....
For me it has boiled down to: do I NEED to go somewhere on that day at that time ... OR do I just WANT to go. When hubby said he would change his appointment, I realized I just "wanted" to get my hair done. So I told him to keep his appointment and I scheduled for later in the day.
i Really enjoy the extra garage space. I also enjoy the extra insurance and maintenance savings. Our car is 5 years old and has approx 50,000 miles on it.
As someone mentioned, a rental car is always an option (if or when it might be needed). We laugh about the fact that we would probably use Enterprise because they deliver the car right to you😍
Hope this helps.

Friends tried that a few years ago.
In less than 12 months they replaced the second car.
Even though neither of them went out that frequently, and they often went together, somehow they wanted the car at the same time.
They said it was not worth the hassle.

Most likely it depends upon where you live - for us - DH having his bike and me having my golf cart gives us all the additional "freedom" and mobility we need. Yesterday I had a hair appt and DH wanted the car so he dropped me off and picked me up.I had to wait for him a short while - no biggie to me - but some wives would be agitated by that. i just sat outside the salon and enjoyed the sun. Most of the time , when I have something to do that does not include him , it is a class at the Y and I can go that far on my golf cart, since i can get there without going on the road. They do make golf carts that are street legal as well. We have a neighbor who takes her's to the library which is several miles.

I live in Metro Atlanta. Atlanta is a "you gotta have a car" city. I don't work anymore and my husband and I are usually together, but not always. No way would I give up one of our cars.
