Advice on selecting electric range

I need to purchase a new electric range and am trying my best to stay out of the $1,000 and above cost.

The ones I have looked at have the knobs on the top back of the stove above the eyes. I don't like the idea of reaching over a hot eye (boiling water, splattering grease) to turn down or cut off the heat. The only ranges that have the knobs in front are gas or in the expensive range (pun not intended).

Any advice?
