Make playdough and build a jungle on a piece of cardboard.

I'd also do what they'd be doing in "school" right now.  You didn't indicate if they're going into K or first.

Re: Activity ideas for 5 yr. old recuperating from surgery

We had our 3yr old child have tonsil surgery December 2015 and our 5yr old, December 2014. They both enjoyed very simple activities like removable sticker scenes/faces or colorforms after surgery when they are still a little groggy and hurting. Simple things that don't require a lot of thinking or concentrating or patience worked well for them. When the nurses came in for vital checks it wasn't a big deal to put those down and pick them back up later and they can change and rechange the scenes or faces over and over. Once home, they were still activity restricted and had to stay in bed or on the couch so things that had no loose pieces like Doodle boards with the pen attached with a cord, or things to hold like floppy stuffed animals ,picture books, dot-to-dot books, a radio, small flashlight, action figures, or a tablet work. When they are not feeling well and their patience is limited, small, quick successes help keep spirits up. Tonsilectomy surgery doesn't allow straw usage during healing so we couldn't use silly straws or sippy cups that used sucking motion, so depending on what this surgery entails will have bearing on what the child may do afterwards. Sometimes just having a new soft furry pillow, or new  favorite character PJ's, or fuzzy colorful socks or thick warm blankies are comforting as well as spirit-lifting. It's also a good time to bring home that favorite cartoon video collection that may drive you nuts but keeps them still and happily quiet on the couch for a while.

All our best wishes for a successful surgery and speedy easy recoverySmiley Happy

My 5 1/2 yr old grandson is having hear surgery on Wed. the 25th (prayers appreciated) and I was wondering if anyone has any good suggestions for him when he goes home to

recuperate in the way of books, games, and appropriate activities. Thank you so much for any ideas!

@Novemberbaby, I have a 5 yo granddaughter. She had repeat ear infections so surgery to put in tubes was done. Is your grandson having that procedure? Most kids that age like stickers. I bought my granddaughter those activity books that have the matching stickers included. Also got various stickers she could put on her drawings. Simple but entertaining and available practically everywhere. Best wishes and a speedy recovery for your grandson!

Is his activity going to be restricted? If not you will find that he is up and playing normally in no time at all. Kids don't tolerate being invalids for long. If his activity is restricted and you have to keep him quiet - that will be more of a challenge.

I believe the child's doctor would be the best person to ask for correct activities. I would NOT venture a suggestion for anyone after receiving surgery. Good luck

Look up "magnet story board" on Amazon.

Clean, lose proof, endless fun! If he's interested in particular stories, you can find a book of figures from the story to cut up and paste magnet tape (staples) on the back.

He can make up stories, share them w his caregivers, and put everything away BY HIMSELF when he's ready to nap or sleep.

Love to him and his dear ones! Hope he will be better than new!

Re: Activity ideas for 5 yr. old recuperating from surgery

In followup to all your prayers and suggestions for after surgery things to do, I am thrilled to

say our grandson had his heart surgery last Wed., and went hom on Sat. & is doing great! He

looked so good even the day after. The hard part now will be keeping him a bit less active while he is still recuperating. God truly answers our prayers!!
