My 5 1/2 yr old grandson is having hear surgery on Wed. the 25th (prayers appreciated) and I was wondering if anyone has any good suggestions for him when he goes home to
recuperate in the way of books, games, and appropriate activities. Thank you so much for any ideas!

We went through something similar with a six year old. I went to Five Below and other discount stores and bought lots of little items that I wrapped individually and put in a basket. Then, he could open something new each day and the long recuperation gave him something to look forward to.
I bought things like-
glow sticks
lip balm
coloring books
markers
pop up Sports Illustrated book
fruit gummy pouches
modeling clay
bake + beads + keychain kit
Legos
card games
granola bars
cartoon band-aids
joke book
small jigsaw puzzle
Silly Putty

@Novemberbaby - First, I'm sending all good wishes to your grandson for a quick recovery and good health. Second, if your grandson is into technology (and what kid isn't these days?!), you might want to get him some engaging tablet educational games, reading systems, etc. from LeapFrog. (Especially for those times when he needs to be resting but doesn't need or want to sleep.)

Anything in the Magna Doodle line of toys. Not just another video game. Encourages artistic and creative fun.

You know your grandson will do just fine but it does not keep us from worrying.
When she was 4.5, one of our GD was in a partial body cast for for almost 3 months. An i-pad became a God-send.
Such great ideas. When they are little, children love opening gifts, no matter how small. I would put a lot of wrapped items in a bag and allow the child to reach in for a daily surprise.

I have 2 of these bed trays. Our grandchildren loved them for toys and for snacks. Then they were nice when the kids were sick because they could play on them even when they were in bed.
I'm sending prayers and blessings of good health for your grandson.

I would like to add these are better than all flat because their toys or crayons won't roll off the edge.

@Novemberbaby, I'm sending my prayers for a successful surgery and positive thoughts of recovery for your dear GS.
Regarding suggestions, @lolakimono had some great ones. If someone can/will be playing with him: checkers/chess.
