Also please don't forget about Veterans. There are so many Veterans homeless and/or in need. I dont have a Vet Center or VA Clinic in my town. But a town across the bridge in Indiana they have both. And I collect items to drop off. The need is great for so many.

I do some work with homeless. Some items are always needed. For example, peanut butter is often donated but no bread.
Bread
Can openers
Cooking oil
Utensils
Personal hygiene items for men and women, including tampons and pads.
Dish soap
Hand soap
Lotion
Washcloths and towels
Easy to open tuna packets are usually better than cans
Instant coffee
Powered creamer
Tea bags
Socks and handwarmers
Scarves
Earmuffs
Batteries
Cough drops
Ointments for cuts
Bandaids
Paper towels
Trash bags
Protein and granola bars
Peanut butter crackers

I don't like donating stuff on my own but prefer to donate to a food bank or buy those bags at the grocery stores that represent meals. That way I know, anything canned is not expired. And I think the money I give can buy alot more than I can , on my own.
