We all have certain words or phrases that pop in our conversations that we are not aware of. At work one day a group of us were talking about a person who kept using a certain word over and over. We then realized that we all had certain things we said when we each pointed out what the others always said. We challanged each other to stop it but we just didn't realize we were saying certain things and even when trying not to - just had a hard time eliminating them.

Two things. 1) For any vendor to me using AGAIN! on a new product just would be his way of pointing out the Consistant quality of ALL his products.
2) I think AGAIN is WAY better than the filler phrase AND-UHH.
Just for chuckles sometime try this exercise... Describe to someone the attributes of something, a pocketbook, a lamp anything. Talk about it for a full one minute WITHOUT using filler words. It's not as easy as it seems.

its the same way people use "i mean", when they start to say something. it always makes me wonder because they say that before they've even said anything. so what exactly are they trying to point out/clarify/explain, when they haven't said anything prior.

Better than starting every sentence with UM......

I'm not bothered by it.

Any filler word drives me nuts. I belong to Toastmasters and we actually have "um counters"; while a person is giving a speech there is another club member that counts their filler words. The final count is part of the positive critique of the speaker.
Uh, um, again, really, ya know, like --- they are all fillers and if you listen to a "frequent offender" often enough it will jump out at you. Once it does, you can't "unhear" it. Kind of like a dripping faucet; once you realize its dripping the sound will drive you CUH-RAY-ZEE, lol.
In summation, I agree! ![]()

The one that makes me crazy is.....basically!!!

Don't forget literally, major, obsessed, and the winner by far LIKE. The word like is sometimes used 5or 6 times per sentence. And I never watch her shows more than a minute or two.

As for better than saying "ummm", I don't think the OP was looking for a contest or one-upping which word is worse. She was commenting on a certain word overused being annoying and I agree. It's not about comparing it to other better or worse words. That's just a red herring regardint this post.
As to how hard it is to rid oneself of that bad habit, yes, we all have words we repeat but we aren't all on television talking to milliions of people we want to stay tuned to sell them things, rather than annoy them so they mute us or turn the station altogether. QVC has training people who need to do a better job training the hosts and the vendors to speak on the air about a problem. I'm not buying the argument "but we all have such words and it's hard not to do it."

Sorry there were just so many things that bothered me about that man that just one word does not stand out. I could not bear to watch him much less repeat anything he said.
