Re: A question about bananas.....

I have started peeling and freezing them. They taste better that way too, I don't like how they get sweeter every day if not frozen.

Re: A question about bananas.....

I was just on Facebook and one posting was called 11 Budget Friendly Hacks to Stop Wasting Food. It said to make bananas last longer wrap the stems in plastic wrap.

Re: A question about bananas.....

I just asked dh about this. They gas bananas in the warhouse. If your bananas don't ripen properly he said either they were not gassed properly OR they got chilled in transit.

ETA: I see sidsmom already answered this in her #10.

Re: A question about bananas.....

I never buy green bananas. But when I buy the ripe ones I pull them apart as soon as I get home and they last a bit longer.

Enjoy them as best you can because the growers are concerned about a spreading fungus that could devastate worldwide crops. It's spread like lightening in Africa. South American growers are worried but not in full panic mode . . yet.

When I buy green bananas they last a week+. Then again I'm in NJ.

This is not true in summer.

Mine always last close to a week but before they get mushy, I peel them, cut into halves and freeze them to use in smoothies and for cooking.

Re: A question about bananas.....

I usually only buy one at a time, but I get the greenest one I can get for the bird. It takes him up to two weeks to get through one banana.

So, what I do is to clean it well and then dry it WELL, making sure it's totally dry. You don't ever want to put produce away wet.

Then I put it in a Lock & Lock container with one of those E.G.G. things. QVC used to sell them as one of Lori Greiner's inventions (not), but I ordered mine from the guy in Wyoming and get all my refills there each year.

Anyway, I can keep the banana green easily for a week and still plenty firm for another week.

Re: A question about bananas.....

Ew. Someone mentioned loving brown overripe bananas. Yuck. They are fine for baking but I will NOT peel and eat one.
