Re: A question about St. Patrick's Day........

[ Edited ]

I'm 1/2 Irish and our city has one of the largest parades and celebrations that will last through the weekend!

From our newspaper:

Celebrations aren’t just confined to St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah. They’re rocking the city all month, which is why March is the one of the most popular times to visit Savannah.

St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah is the most exciting time of the year in this Hostess City, with all kinds of events inviting guests to grab their green, get out and have some fun. This monumental popularity didn’t just come overnight; it took 190 years of the famous St. Patrick’s Day Parade to get Savannah on the map. And now Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day is one of the hottest in the nations, with Savannah ranking the third largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the world.

We even dye our fountains green, LOL!

The parade is televised here, but you can also watch it live on Savannahnow.com (our newspaper's website) if anyone wants to take a peak!

And with all of the pollen we're having right now, even my red SUV is green, LOL!

Kids would tell me since I didn't wear green on St. Patrick's Day, I would get pinched.....sort of a punishment for not wearing green.

It was a game, not an ethnic torture, lots of giggling... at least where I lived.  I never wore green, either, I didn't like the color when I was a kid.

I'm Irish, too. It's a great way to celebrate that spring is almost here. And don't forget that March 19th is St. Joseph's Day. Wear red! It's a special day for Czechs, Slovaks, and other central European people.

You can never have too much fun celebrating your heritage, and honoring others'.

Chinese New Year/Tet is even bigger here, obviously because of population numbers.

The celebration goes on for days with special food, flowers and handing out red envelopes with money inside for young people.  It's a big deal to clean house, get new clothes and a haircut, all aimed toward getting ready for the New Year.  Eating out in Asian restaurants with friends and family is also important.

Most of the city joins in and there is a huge parade which is also televised.

@Colinka - So very true.  We need to remember that all year not just on special days.

That's mean.

I wouldn't want my kids getting pinched for not wearing green.

When I was pinched, or as a kid, I did the piching, it was always gently done. No "torture" involved.
