When I sat down, the cat would squeezer herself into the chair with me and the dog would like across my feet or he would lay his head on my feet. Both of are in pet heaven now. We've had our current cat for 17 years and right from the beginning, he was my husband's cat. When hubby is home, he follows him around and when hubby is in the bathroom, he sits outside the door and waits for him. He, that's the cat, doesn't care much about me. I'm the one who feeds him, gives him water, buys his blankets for him, worries about him when he seems to be under the weather. But he doesn't care much for me. The only attention he gives me is when he wants to be fed, he'll tap me on the knee with his paw.
You're story is so sweet... it reminds me of my old dog Chinook... he was really "my" first dog, even though we had always had dogs in my family growing up. He was like adopting my first kid, my responsibility, my dog. Of course my parents loved him and we lived near each other so they saw him lots, and many times my mom would be grandma "pup-sitter" while I was at work, then I would swing by, visit and pick up the pup. This was the only grand-baby they were ever going to have. Obviously Nook had a great relationship with my parents, but it was only after my mother died that he changed. We (Nook and me) would come back so many times to visit my parents, or they would come to visit us... the first time we went back to visit after my mom died.... Nook knew things were different. He walked through the house, smelled around, searched like he was looking for my mom, then he went and laid at my dad's feet. Things changed after that. I had to return home to go back to my job, but I left Nook with my dad, and they created a new bond. I knew Nook would give my dad purpose while I could not be there, and when I returned a month later, there was no denying, my dog was his. It was a beautiful thing to see... they were like glue, I was just the girl that fed them. My dad could not move without Nook being on his heels. Once upon a time Nook obeyed me, but he ignored me unless I was feeding him. He knew who needed him the most. Eventually I did move to be with my dad, and Nook was always his until his last breath.
Our furbabies are so special, each in their own ways. While some things they do might annoy us, like poking their noses in our showers or watching us at our most "vulnerable" moments... they always love us.
I have truly enjoyed reading this thread, and all the stories people have shared. I'm so glad that we have curious furbabies in our lives.
