Re: A frivolous curiosity....

Current and past kitties have always followed us to the bathroom. My boy kitty likes to get between the shower curtain & liner in DH's shower and swat at him! He also likes to jump up on the hamper in my bathroom, and be petted. I often pull back the shower curtain to find my girl kitty curled up on the hamper watching me. And forget closing the door! She'll just beat on it with her paws til I open it.

Yes, they follow me right in. Sometimes I just close the door quickly behind me, especially when I shower.

Instinct. She considers you leader of the pack.

Hi Jules - What a great thread! I love all these stories.

My 2 "old puppies" that I have now don't because they are outside dogs. I know, I know...sad and mean, but as you may recall they are not really our dogs. Rather, they are our neighbor's dogs who were feeling ignored at home and so they adopted us. We are not really supposed to have pets at all so we don't let them in. They were mostly outside dogs at their original home so they are used to it. It's Hawaii so it's not too bad out there and they find shade when it's too hot.

But anyway, yes back in my past life in California with my ex-husband and raising our sons, our dogs came in and out of the house as they pleased. As for the bathroom, my little terrier mutt was more apt to follow me in there if the door wasn't closed. My golden retriever was happy to lie/lay (?) in the hall or the bedroom and wait.

In reading all these responses, I think BuckleBunny got it right way back at the start of this thread. It must be instinct for pack members to follow their pack leader. Pretty interesting!

I used to have a cat (Ivan the terrible) who would follow me to the tub. Wait for the water to fill up. Then he'd dip both of his front legs in up to his chest....he'd usually double or triple dip.....that cat was hilarious.

He refuses to leave until I cuddle with him! We have a glass shower door, so he sits patiently guarding me until I get out and when I sit down to put my makeup on (I sit on the floor by the window-great lighting), he insists on lying down right there with his head on my lap. He's a total snuggle bug!

I also sit and apply my makeup by the window, and agree that natural light is the best.

No, but my kids always did when they were toddlers.

I would say "Where's my privacy???!"

One day my daughter (about 2 years old) came in and looked behind the bathroom door and pulled the shower curtain back and said "Where's your privacy?" as though she were looking for an actual object.

Our dog (female Shepherd) is very shy about going to the bathroom. She goes all the way to the back almost behind a shed. If I happen to be out back and see her she looks at me almost with embarrassment. She is such a lady.

Our cat, female also, turns her back to you and if you happen to walk past the room she'll keep from eye contact as if to say "I don't see you--I don't see you!"

{#emotions_dlg.lol} Kids are so literal.

Yep. I also think that there are many pets - dogs and cats - who think of us as substitute mamas, and that's why they're always around. Thankfully! 8)

Of course there are those who feel they should 'supervise' us, to make sure we're doing whatever it is 'correctly'. Smiley Wink

Re: A frivolous curiosity....

My kitteh always follows me into the bathroom because he is a water cat. He knows that's where the water is and thinks I'm going to do water things with him every time I go in. For example, he sits on the ledge of the tub and drinks out of a cup of water his human (me) holds under his chin, or the human slowly pours a cup of water into the tub and he sticks his paw out to catch the drops. {#emotions_dlg.blink} He knows when I'm getting ready to shower every day, runs in ahead of me and jumps into the tub. I'm standing there nekkid in the tub with him and he plops down and starts rolling. We have this whole routine where I say, "You have to get out of the shower now. You have to get out of the shower now." (We all say things twice to our pets, right? And in a baby voice too. {#emotions_dlg.laugh}) Then I rub his belly and he stretches out his paws. Then he gets up and walks in between my legs where he stops, waiting for me to pick him up (I swear he gets heavier every week). He enjoys flying over the tub onto the other side.

This is all to explain that my cat is right there when I am doing my business because he figures I might do one of these water things with him. He sits right in front of me and stares. It's very disconcerting. I"ve given up on trying to lock him out because he will sit on the other side of the bathroom door meowing and clawing at the door. "Let me in! Let me in!"

Re: A frivolous curiosity....

Yep, especially in the morning because they want breakfast and, evidently, they think they can hurry me along if they come in with me. I usually have one cat sitting the sink, one cat sitting behind me on the back of the toilet with her head perched on my right shoulder, one cat using a litterbox and one cat on my lap. The other two cats are sitting in the hallway meowing. Loudly.

During the evening, though, it's usually just Muffin who likes to visit with me. I'm a captive audience, so she can jump into my lap and talk to me.

I don't know what it's like to be in the bathroom by myself.
