Thanks for the extra incentive to stop even farther from the vehicle in front. Very much appreciated! Most folks stop too close.
I drive a stick, by the way.

Two hands on the wheel, two eyes on the road and leave at least two cars between you and the guy in front. If you are stopping for a red light, leave enough room between you and the car in front so that if someone bumps you from behind you won't go into the back of that car. No playing around with the radio. Set your stations so that all you have to do is push a button for a favorite - you can't look at the dial and the road at the same time. (We didn't have all the new electronics in those days!)
Always use your turn signals, but remember to turn them off if they don't go off on their own. And just because the speed limit is 75, it's okay not to go that fast if you're not comfortable with it. A STOP sign means just that. He wanted me to stop for a full 6 seconds before proceeding. The same for YIELD. It means let the other guy go first. And always leave early enough to be sure you get there without speeding or taking chances.

Leave enough space between cars.

Never brake in a turn or curve, do your braking before, then if necessary you can accelerate.
Always expect the worst from everyone else on the road and be prepared for it. If they don't do it, you can be happily surprised.
Don't just drive "in your space" pay attention to what could affect all those around you so you can expect and plan for their reaction.
Never pull back in front of a semi until you can see the entire truck down to the wheels in your rearview mirror.

One time, my dad told me that the yellow light meant "rush like he!! to beat the red!" hahahahahahaha Mom didn't think it was funny.

My dad never taught me anything about driving. My parents did pay for me to take driving lessons because Dad was rarely available during daylight hours & Mom was too nervous. The best thing I learned from the instructor was defensive driving. Watching other drivers' body language serves me well, especially in this day of drunk & distracted drivers.

My daughter is teaching my grandson to drive. She is not happy with his progress. She doesn't want to turn him over to his dad, who is one of the worst drivers I have ever seen. I am going to copy these off and give them to my grandson. I hope it helps both he and my daughter!!!!!!!
The only thing I remember my dad telling me is.... look to be sure you have enough gas every time you get in the car.

I took drivers ed in HS - they taught us things like how far back you needed to be from the car ahead of you, and how far away the cars in other lanes needed to be so you could pass, and how to merge onto highways properly. Very valuable lessons. My dad taught me how to drive a stick shift, and how to change a tire, and check all the fluid levels, and how to properly wash a car.
