A Thanksgiving pause for thought

I read an editorial this morning that really saddened me. It was addressing this Black Friday shopping phenomena and that many stores are opening even earlier this year (like in the middle of the afternoon). Basically, it was an opinion that one reason why so many people are so anxious to get out and shop, or watch a football game therefore removing themselves from the family gathering, was that these people just couldn't stay being with their families. Once the eating is over, there is nothing more to say or do with each other. I'm well aware that, in some families, the holidays frequently result in numerous disagreements, or even worse, violence, especially when alcohol is in the mix. But I think it is very sad when family members don't get along. If we can't have peace, understanding, support, and love among members of our own family, how can we expect peace in our country and in our world. We don't need to agree. We can dislike what someone does, thinks, or says, but we can treat them with dignity and respect. Myu family is far from perfect. We are a fractured group, with divorces, re-marriages, rebellious teenagers, opposite political and religious beliefs, etc. etc. but we bury our personal disagreements to love each other and just plain have fun. On this Thanksgiving Day 2012, I feel blessed and honored to be in a family where we love and honor each other; we respect our differences of opinion; we comfort and support each other in times of need; and we celebrate the joy of being related.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
