TO ALL TEXANS---

@Lali1 @granddi @Cakers3 @patbz

if you are on auto pay, as @MamaWick  suggested stop auto pay for now. And CPS Energy said to disregard the ENERGY PORTAL info shown on their website, in fact they pulled that portion of the website down and said the info is inaccurate and they are working on some options and going through all the accounts.....

Re: A TIP FOR MY FELLOW TEXANS

From midnight Sunday until our power went out totally for 22 hours at 6:15pm Monday evening, we had cycling going on. Every 8 minutes on the nose, our power went out for a split second and then came right back on. Clocks, microwave, stove, TV, computer, etc all needed resetting. We didn't, of course, but that cycling caused our daily usage to go up a lot.

There has got to be something wrong with recent reports of astronomical bills.  People couldn't possibly had their meters read and have gotten their bills that fast.

I thought the exact same thing. Something very very wrong about this story. People don't care to find out if things are true they just freak out and go crazy.

Unfortunately, the reports are true. As a Texas living through all this misery, there are many layers to our problems.

Texas Electrical Power is deregulated. You must "shop" for the deal you want. This could be a fixed price per killowatt hour or it can be flexible depending on many factors. One of those factors is the price of natural gas. When the power was depleted by demand and equipment break/shut down, more natural gas had to be purchased by the power company but at a "spot" price. This price was many times the lower contracted price. The extra cost was passed onto customers. Spot price= think of price gouging of essentials during any disaster.Texas is not a part of the national grid. They decided to have their own source.

We were able to access our electric account and see our usage since last billing. This must be how some know their bills. Many actual bills are shown by local tv.

Far West Texas and far East Texas opted to not enter this go it alone energy plan that was hatched decades ago by none other than ENRON. Texas citizens will be following the money. This will be the most expensive casulity loss in our history--more than Harvey.

Natural gas lines froze. Wind generators were not winterized. Nuclear Power went down. Power plant equipment froze. Transformers blew.

Everything went wrong that could have gone wrong. It was a worst case scenairo.

@granddi

And from what I understand, those customers that chose to go with wholesale pricing instead of a fixed rate were promised a much lower rate (lower bill) in the temperate weather.  Which often turned out not to be as low as they thought (or were perhaps lead to believe) it would be.

People gambled that any high pricing would only be for a short period.  No one ever anticipated this extreme bad weather for such an extended period of time.  Add to that it hit the whole south so when they were looking for energy to purchase nobody had any extra to spare like in most other energy emergencies.

@Spurt.  I never heard of ERCOT when I lived in Texas.  It's too bad they're a non-profit so there's nothing to sieze.  Do you pay a monthly bill to them?  I paid Houston Lighting & Power...can't remember the electric company in West Texas but it wasn't ERCOT.

I posted this already but We have someone drive around with a reader on their vehicle. While they drive they get the info. Much like a meter reader of the past but easier on them. In Texas.

@Kachina624

I dont think hardly anyone knew anything about ERCOT before this happened.....

Nope each city sends their payment to their local Energy Company, ERCOT is the overseer of energy distribution and management for the deregulated market for the State of Texas (they are themselves physically located in another state)....What is irking people ----they knew the bad weather was coming, they had a meeting, February 9th, and word leaked out that the majority of the meeting was talk of people wearing cowboy boots in snow....and the plan for the actual weather event lasted 40 seconds...at least thats what our News Troubleshooters and the Austin newspaper found out.....

This is what worries me when our CEO of CPS Energy Co. said... She said its a huge undertaking for the State, the goal is to make sure skyrocketing costs for power aren’t immediately passed down to you.

@Anonymous032819.  Thank you very much as I enjoy having the last word and, yes, I'm becoming more snitful by the minute but you gave a laugh.

Re: A TIP FOR MY FELLOW TEXANS

The $17K bill was for a guy using Griddy as his provider -- this is a company that spot buys power on a wholesale level and you pay that day's price. The wholesale price of electricity shot up during this crisis and he indeed had a huge bill. I think he learned that trying to say money up front by gambling on the daily price of electricity wasn't such a good idea. He has switched providers now, although for a time he couldn't find a provider wanting to take him. He's still on the hook for the $17K though.

You can Google the story if you want to learn more.
