Re: A Phrase That Just Gets To Me

Maybe "apple picking" and "pumpkin picking" are euphemisms for something else?  I don't know.

Well, if I actually owned a sweatshirt with a pumpkin on it, you can be sure I wouldn't be wearing it anywhere but pumpkin picking.

Actually, in some parts of the country, people do go apple picking. And if you have kids, you may very well be going to the pumpkin patch, too. Or you may be going on a hayride. Or, closer to the holidays, you may be going to cut down your own tree. I'm not saying you need a whole new outfit to do so, but many people actually take part in these kinds of fall/winter activities.

True.  And we tend to wear sneakers, jeans and sweatshirts.  And not new ones because no one dresses up or buys a new outfit to pick out pumpkins or jump up into a hayride wagon.

I wouldn't be so sure that "no one" does Smiley Happy -- I've seen lots of people wearing "seasonal" items (think QF) or colors (think D&Co side pocket pants in spice orange) for such activities, and that spiel is usually used when those types of items are being sold.

[ Edited ]

I have lived all my life either in New England or tne midwest, and have gone apple picking and pumpkin picking each fall (and hayrides some years!) as far back as I can remember. It's a part of autumn, and a really nice day outdoors before the weather turns bad.  It's fun to pick my own pumpkin as the one I leave out on my porch and later carve out for Halloween; as I do so, I remember with pleasure the day I spent picking it out.  Drinking apple cider - and bringing some home - is also part of the day.

Wouldn't miss it!

Those are great days, especially the apple cider.  We used to have that and plain donuts.  Yummy!  Do you save the pumpkin seeds to toast later?

@TNRatPack  I don't any more because I never make them right. My mom always baked them in the oven with salt and they came out great - but mine never come out right so I stopped making them.

You brought back a memory.  On Halloween night when we were kids growing up, an adult cousin of mine and her husband, who were childless, came over to watch  us in our costumes before we went trick or treating and they brought donuts and cider each year.  They'd stay and watch TV with my dad while my mom took us out and when we came back we'd have the donuts and cider.  The good old days. Thanks for the fond memories.

It doesn't bother me or make me order if I hadn't planned on it.

Thank you for your post.  Good memories are wonderful.  I'm going to think of what you said when we have our cider and donuts this fall!
