Haven't had a Manhattan for probably 30 years and when we were at the spooky Stanley Hotel recently purchased a local distillery bourbon.

Some concoctions use rye whiskey, bourbon and  bitters lots of variations.

I thought it was just bourbon, cherry juice and sweet vermouth.

Any favorite recipes?

Re: A Manhattan Cocktail Recipe

I recall having one sometime in my younger years.  I didn't like it as it tasted too much like whiskey, which I don't care for.

My mother drank her Manhattan with brandy, sweet vermouth, bitters, and a cherry.

The Manhattan according to Mr. Boston:

2 ounces Rye or Bourbon whiskey

1/2 ounce Sweet Vermouth

1 dash Angostura Bitters

1 Maraschino cherry

Stir with ice and strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with cherry.

The Perfect Manhattan

    2 oz. rye whiskey

    0.5 oz. sweet vermouth

    0.5 oz. dry vermouth

    2 dashes Angostura Bitters

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass, add ice and stir for 15 to 20 seconds. Strain off ice into a cocktail, coupe, or Martini glass, and garnish with a cocktail cherry.

Re: A Manhattan Cocktail Recipe

A Manhattan was my mother's favorite cocktail.  I'm sure hers were made with rye.  I've never had one.

@just bee, that is the Perfect Manhattan recipe I use if I make one at home. However, I don’t even know what rye whiskey tastes like. I always use bourbon or Jack Daniel’s, ask for that in a restaurant/bar as well. This has been my favorite drink since the 1970s, delicious. Unfortunately, old age and health issues preclude my having more than the occasional drink. I sure miss my Perfect Manhattans.

I felt that ordering a Manhattan was adult -- even chic.

I'll have a Manhattan.

Better, I thought, than ordering a Scr*wdriver, a Long Island Iced Tea, Tequila Sunrise or S*x on the Beach. Woman Wink
