I was just reminded of something while googling. Several of us here remember enjoying comics as young readers. I had forgotten about the Classics Illustrated comics, of which I read many. Comic book condensed versions of classic literature. They were enough to give you the basic plot, and interest you in reading the book when you were a few years older.
I also had a picture book of the stories of Shakespeare (not the Lamb book), and when I got older, I actually knew the basic plot of many of the plays.
