Re: 90 Year Old Seattle Woman Walks Six Miles For Vaccine

My guess is that she walked because the road conditions scared her for driving. She must have seen walking as the lesser of two evils in that situation. She used walking sticks, so I am guessing she walks on a fairly regular basis.

Maybe her car was encased in ice or snow too.

@KKJ

Seattle is a very hilly city and it could be the streets in her area were not plowed.  It is always recommended that if you don't have to drive, then don't.

I don't blame her for walking.  There aren't too many vaccination spots in the Seattle area and we aren't getting a large amount of vaccines.  You just don't cancel if you can snag an appointment.

Lots of elderly people in Seattle are avid walkers (including myself)!

[ Edited ]

I was online for hours and hours to get DH and I our shots.  It paid off and we had out first shots and appointments for our second ones scheduled.  I would also walk 6 miles or do whatever to get to my 2nd appointment.

I live in Renton right outside of Seattle and I dug out  8 inches of snow from our long  driveway  for two hours so DH could  get to the street to go to his  1st vaccine  appointment on Monday last.  They call snow shoveling the widow maker....so I never let him shovel. I work out and exercise so am healthier I think than he is😄

this lady had about a foot of snow to deal with...

Ridiculous feat for anyone to do in frigid weather let alone a 90 yr old female.why no one gave her a ride, I don't know as I didn't read the whole long story.

@sunshine45   I live in the Seattle area....no ubers were going to get through the side streets with a foot  of unplowed snow... you have to rely  on yourself during a weather event.

Got cut off, here is the rest of the article.

She hasn’t felt that way since the pandemic began. She does her best, taking Zoom classes (right now it’s a Lifelong Learning class about post-World War II China), ordering food online and picking it up in her car. (Yes, she still drives).

“I hate it,” she said. “I will be happy to get back out into a grocery store and pick out my own things".

She's 90? Those are some great genes! Good for her. She sounds like a very determined woman.

Glad she got her shot but cannot imagine being so desperate for that shot that she ignored common sense and put herself in  more danger than not getting it!

Re: 90 Year Old Seattle Woman Walks Six Miles For Vaccine

I'm not certain why the vaccine clinic was even open on this day, if the road conditions were so bad!

Where I live, Saturday is the make-up day for clinics that have to be cancelled on weekdays due to bad weather or dangerous driving conditions.  This has happened twice this winter, so far.   The clinics are staffed by individuals who also have to drive to get there.  Some of us are volunteers and also seniors....me, for instance!

I would have even more sympathy for this lady if she made the trek there, only to find it closed.  At least she got her shot.
