Re: 9/11 Anniversary: Where Were You

I was working in NYC and saw the second tower go down.  I lost 2 friends who were fireman, one recovered and one was not.  My former administrative assistant was lost as well, a single Mom of a two year old and an only child.  Every year, I attend the memorial.

Re: 9/11 Anniversary: Where Were You

I was sitting in a hotel room (we couldn't live in our house because we'd had a fire).  My husband on a play flying to Florida on business.  I actually was watching the Today show when Katie Couric commented and on TV we saw the plane go into the building!

My next door neighbor was standing outside of the Pentagon (we live not far from there and I used to work there).  Her workers were picking up something from the Pentagon and they were taking it back to Ft Belvoir.  She said suddenly she saw smoke and people running toward her.  She said she took off running and got in the van they had and headed toward Ft Belvoir.  She was standing on the corner of the opposite side of where the plane hit.  My best friend would have had her office there except they'd been moved to Crystal City because her office was being renovated.  I heard so many stories and I knew people who were affected by the Pentagon hit one way or another.

My younges daughter actually worked for the Sept 11 Fund.  To this day she is affected by what she saw.  She doesn't talk about it much.  She had nightmares because of the pictures she had to look at and the interviews of the people there and their relatives affected.

A lot of people don't know but there was a definite way of calculating how much money each living family member would get.  You can look it up.

I think they should show show the specials that were made later honoring the people who were there, the people who died, everyone's stories.  I've seen many of them they are amazing!

I won't say anything more maybe my post won't get deleted.  If it does, so be it.

Re: 9/11 Anniversary: Where Were You

I was in the kitchen, husband (at time) answered phone and it was our neighbor telling us to put on the tv...sad, shocking and horrible news for all.  I'm just got home from FL with my dad who would be living with us.  We were watching tv all day and it felt horribly sad, shocking and surreal...still does.

On my way to work.  It was announced on the radio while I was driving and could hardly wait till I got to the office.  They closed the office shortly after I got there.  It was such a horrible day.....and oh so sad.

I was at work 15 miles from Manhattan. Someone heard it on the radio. We listened for awhile and as it got worse, the whole office got together, said a group prayer and went home.

[ Edited ]

I was the writing specialist for our district's middle schools. I was in my office with my radio on, as usual. I heard the first plane hit. I assumed it was a small plane. I had trouble believing it. Then, when the second plane hit, I was so naive I thought the smoke from the first plane caused the second one not to see! Then, my dh called me and said he thought it was terrorists! He doesn't get hysterical easy, so I listened! I went to our library where the tv was on. I got there just in time to see the Pentagon get hit! I live 70 miles north of the city. Many of our students had parents working in Manhattan ! I immediately went to guidance to help with the line of upset kids trying to call the parents. On a funny note, ( not funny haha, funny odd) The other middle school in our district was called Twin Towers. We had many parents come to get their kids because they thought the other school had been what had been hit!

My dd was in college across the Hudson. Classes were cancelled. She was upset and wanted to come home but I didn't want her crossing the bridge at that point. It was the first time in my life I really worried I'd lose my dd! I was in shock for the next two weeks!

Teaching fourth graders. Someone came in and told me to turn TV on to news channel. It was just at the moment second tower went down. The staff was told to NOT let the students see anything that was happening. Immediate and all day lockdown. So sad.

I had worked 3 - 11 the night before so I was at home - sitting in the kitchen on a beautiful fall day, sun shining and sky blue. I was eating my cereal and watching Brian Gumball on a morning show when he went to an announcement that a plane had accidently hit the WTC and they went to live coverage. I actually watched live as the second plane hit. Brian Gumbal thought they had messed up the live feed then with a very broken voice he stammered out that another plane had hit the pentagon and we were under attack. I lived only 3 miles from the Air Force base in  Pittsburgh and within a short time my dog was carrying on at the door and I heard buzzing - very soon the sky was filled with blackhawk helicopters with armed soldiers hanging out flying very low over the tree tops and heading east. I shortly learned that the third plane had crashed in a farmers field in Shanksville, Pa about 75 miles away. All this within about 30 min - then my DH's office called to tell me that my DH & 2 other guys were flying from Cleveland to Fort Wayne and the office has not been able to reach them. They were saying on the news that they suspected 11 more possible planes had been hijacked. I turned into a bundle of nerves. It was about 4 hours before I heard from my DH - his plane had been able to go to Fort Wayne but the company had decided to close for a few days so he had to get back to Cleveland where his car was. By a pure miracle he had been able to rent a car, so they were heading back to Cleveland by car and hoping & praying they could buy gas when needed. He called me from Cleveland - they couldn't get a hotel room but we have a friend who lives there and he stayed with her. It was such a long long day! The hospital had cancelled all elective procedures the next day so I was called off from work - I was glad to stay home and rest - the day before had been so tense! My DH made it home by early afternoon, I was so glad to see him. He had to pay $9 a gallon for gas the day before because stations were price gouging.

My sil was in college close to Shanksville! He said they felt the earth tremble...thought it was an earthquake!

Re: 9/11 Anniversary: Where Were You

I was working in a hospital OR. , and we would hear bits and pieces of news, so when I could get to a phone, I called my mom, and she filled me in. I remember that when I heard that the Pentagon was attacked, I was so scared.
