I am old but I don't like comments that infer that I am "old."

When I was in the hospital, I was referred to as an elderly female. Found that discouraging! Guess for medical it was correct!

I agree, 80 years young seems deeming to me. She is just 80 years old.

My older sister married a young cadet in pilot training at Drane Field in Lakeland, Florida during WWII. She was 10 years older than me!

He drove a Jeep over to the house and took us for a ride through the woods. We thought that was the greatest!

My 99 year young mother will tell you in a hot minute age is just a number (long before Aaliyah song) & you are as young as you feel.

My mother always states she does not feel old. Has no aches & pains, stays active & mind is still sharp. Does not use a walker either. Wears tunics, leggings, Reeboks, Timberlins w/her fur coats like she's on a Paris runway. She will also tell you, she has never worn granny panties. Lives in a 50+ community but her 2nd home is Borgato Casino. Matter of fact, she will be celebrating her 100th birthday at Borgato Casino on their dime which includes paying the "family & friends" expenses.

I myself have asked many times on this forum "How old is old?' Not one response ever.

When asked my age I respond I am 7 decades & 4yrs young. I also have no aches & pains, never sick. I do suffer migraines. I told my neurologist that the migraines keeps all the sicknes & diseases away. Of course she just rolls her eyes & pays me no mind.

I've been referred to as Miss (first name). I do not find it rude or whatever.

I do believe it could be a southern issue but I've also been referred to as Ma'am, usually as Yes Ma'am.

Much fuss over nothing.

I agree with you. Elderly refers to those that can't get by on their own, mobility issues. I am a senior at 82 but need little help. Old is not complimentary at all.

@Biftu Was I correct in assuming that you were referring to other people referring to an 80 year old? If so, I agree that it comes across as patronizing.

But most of the posters seemed to take it as how a person might refer to herself, and if that's the case then of course we can refer to ourselves however we want. But I didn't think this is what you meant in your OP.

I don't find that offensive at all. I am 72, so I am definitely what people would call "old." I do not deny it, nor lie about my age. What is the point? Would I prefer to be much younger? Of course! However, I know that to still be here on earth is a blessing. We are not guaranteed any certain number of days or years. If I reach 80 and someone says that I am 80 years young, I will not find it demeaning, but will be flattered by it.

@Biftu @shoesnbags That's what I thought, too! If one referes to oneself as whatever age young, that's fine...their choice. I do not like hearing others (who are mostly much younger) saying whatever age young. It sounds patronizing to me.
