A few years ago, my mother gave me a Kenmore hand mixer as a gift. I wanted to register it for warranty purposes. But Sears insisted I needed the purchase receipt. I explained it was a gift and I didn't have a receipt. They were unmoved. And I wasn't about to ask my mother for the receipt.
Though I already knew it, the incident confirmed that Sears was badly managed and doomed.

We have a lot of Lowe's here, but you see more cars at the HD Stores....From my little experiences and HD experience --- HD has better prices, more helpful employees....and customer's seem to lean more toward's HD Renovation & Home Services than Lowe's.....

The last I heard our Sears store was to close by mid December. Since it is now 12/31 I am assuming they have locked the door. It is sad to see it disappear after so much time.

Our Sears store closed earlier this year. Hated to see that happen!

Would you visit a Sears store that had no customers or visible employees on the floor? Yeah, I don't think so either.
Business Insider visited a Sears store in New Jersey when Sears declared bankruptcy in October and took a lot of photos inside the store. It looks like a department store on its last legs for sure!

@Spurt Both Lowe's and HD use contractors for all those 'services' and the work is only as good as the contractor... There have been some pretty sad experiences related involving both of them... I think HD simply has a higher level of visibility than does Lowe's... They advertise more and my guess is more people think of them first when thinking home improvement... I also believe that a few years back when Lowe's began cutting back on staff, commisions and probably on salary and benefits, they probably began suffering from the 'hire anybody who's breathing' syndrome... Skilled and knowledgeable sales people went by the wayside...

I remember going to Sears and buying a bag of popcorn to munch on while shopping.
We also used to buy peanut clusters and stars at the candy counter. They weighed it
out with a scoop and scale....my dad was a baker ( everything from scratch in those days and he had one of those scales for his flours, crisco, butter, etc. Everything was
weighed out and not measured. I loved Sears paints and their fabric dept. It used to be a great store. Ours is closing in town, and I am sad.

Sears is dying such a slow, painful death. It's really hard to watch. It will be a textbook study in company mismanagement for years to come.
