I am so sad to read this story. I remember being a tween/teen and inhaling helium but not from a mylar balloon. None the less what a tragedy for this family. My prays go out to this family,

Bizarre does not begin to describe this sad situation. If she cut a mylar balloon and crawed inside....how the heck could an 8 year old suffocate? It was a huge balloon and mylar doesn't cling like latex. Unless she inhaled a massive amount of the helium and lost consiousness immediate. Okay....that could be what happened.
Okay, I admit that I haven't been following the minute details of this tragedy.
It's been a long time since I was eight years old, but I can't fathom why she would decide to climb inside a giant helium filled mylar balloon.
I never would have thought to do that when I was eight, or any age.

Where is someone getting the idea that it was a giant one? I thought it was just a regular sized one like people have blown up at the Dollar Stores. Did I miss something in the link?

The article I read didn't specifically say how big the balloon was, just that the father found her with it over her head. I'm having a hard time understanding how this happened too. It breaks my heart when I hear about things like this happening to children.

The original Newser article says the balloon was 3ft. Maybe she did this on purpose? I can understand trying to inhale helium, but to cut off the balloon? It sounds like cut open the balloon and then put her head inside the balloon and tied it around her head???

I'm not sure anyone will ever comprehend why she would do such a thing. It just goes beyond my thought of what an 8 year old would do.

Did any reports mention if she was mentally challenged?

She apparently was trying to inhale the helium gas from the balloon and was exfixiated. So sad.
And the same ole question --- where were her parents?

If the balloon opening was large enough for her head, how did she suffocate?? Once she cut the balloon for her head, most of the helium would be lost. Sounds like there is more to this story.
