This is really bigger then they all thought. They are now saying up to 110 million could be affected as other data files were hacked as well, indicating that people who didn't even shop during the specific dates had their data taken. It was on the national evening news and on top news websites. Fear is that hackers will match data and identify thefts may occur.

ITA. There are a lot of wealthy people in the Bay Area that shop at Target. I can't vouch for anywhere else, but the stores around here are always clean and well stocked, also.</ Why do people shop there? It is a horrible environment!
How do you know? You've never been there.
LOL

It was nationwide so I'd assume that California wasn't left out.

People will call you nuts, but there is more and more risk to using credit/debit all the time. The people who hack into these systems are as hard at work as those trying to set up protections, and it would be safer to just use cash for all purchases. We don't use debit at all for just this reason, and after this Target mess, I cringe when I use credit.
I've never been a fan of Target, and was glad when this story broke that I don't shop there, but I realize that is just a false sense of security. This can happen anywhere.

Why would you say this?
No one individual had to pay for stolen info...
The banks, insurers and the store covered the loss.
I wouldn't want to be carrying a bundle of cash....and get robbed the old fashioned way!
Once your information is stolen it is out there. It isn't as much about the money lost on the accounts (like you said, most banks, insurers covered those losses), but rather about the private information also gained can then be used for identity theft. If you carry cash correctly, no one knows you have a bundle. Most people are so ignorant about money/financial security matters and just assume this type of thing won't happen to them.

When this story first broke, I was so relieved that I had not shopped at Target in a long time. However, I think I heard yesterday that they have now found that the threat goes back much further than just this past Holiday shopping timeline. So, therefore, it could include me, too! The last time I shopped there was late 2011, probably Nov. or Dec. So I suppose I am included now. Did anyone else hear that it goes further back than just this past couple of months? (And I apologize if this has already been mentioned, I did not read all the posts - I am trying to limit myself to just being on the computer for 1 hour per day, so I don't read everything). Thanks!!

Yes, we also read that. I rarely shop at Target, but I did buy something last September. So, I called our bank to see if we should cancel our debit cards and get new ones and they could tell from the last four digits our card number that we weren't affected. I wonder how that worked? I was thankful, though.
