think about that....you've been going to the bathroom in your bed for 3 yrs, no shower, no bath, your leg has stuff oozing from it...you are given a chance to improve your situation and you eat take out and make more excuses.

@nun ya I watch this show a lot and what I find is that it is pretty clear that some are truly striving to change their lives and break free from their past and the rest are looking to continue their life patterns even after being given support, guidance and counseling but it is beyond me why they would chose to showcase their behavior on TV.

Re: 600 POUND LIFE JAMES' STORY

[ Edited ]

Hi to you @momtochloe,

I have seen a few of these types of shows. Some I watched are real stories, some sad, but while I can empathize with the overweight person, no sympathy from me.

I wrote a short bio of my weight problems over on the Wellness Forum. Think the thread was titled something to do with a "Diet Pill or drug". Been there and I learned at age 15(1954) what I had to do then, and continue to do long term (which to me means, the rest of my life). Not a few months/year/years, but live a lifestyle conducive to staying as healthy and physically fit as was/is possible.

Many of the 500-1,000lb individuals had to be maybe 50-100lb overweight as some point in their lives. If they were not interested/motivated at those weights? Why did they not seek health before they became pretty much immobile? I don't have the answers to them or for anyone, only the answers for myself.

Sure, I have a pretty thorough background in Health and Exercise and Human Physiology, but no paper to hang on my wall, just living experiences and lots and lots of clinics/books, and even a guinea pig, for a few Exercise Physiologists Studies.

I could not use this to help my wife, but she chose her way to fixing her problem with weight. Not my choice, but I was/am behind her decision every step of the way. It worked for her and is still working 9 years later. She has been living, what both of us consider, a normal active/med free life ever since.

Long enough, too long for most,

Re: 600 POUND LIFE JAMES' STORY

I watch all of these shows and James was up there as being one of the worst. No one mentioned, but James EVEN had heart failure and that didn't stop him from eating.

James reminds me of an old Reader's Digest story on a man who continued smoking after they had to make a hole in his neck to breath and they showed a picture of the man still smoking through the hole in his neck.

Pauline is another of Dr. Now's failures. Dr. Now hospitalized her for two months and that's about the most weight she ever lost, even with the surgery. Pauline REFUSED to get up and walk, and REFUSED to give up her food. A real big failure. Pauline used her son to take care of all her needs and didn't give a toot about him. They ate together.

There was another bad failure, and I can't remember her name. She was bedridden and her husband enabled her and she had a young son. She never lost weight and continued telling herself she was doing very well. Dr. Now had to drop her.

There's only 5% long-term success with them. 95% fail.

Re: 600 POUND LIFE JAMES' STORY

@febe1  I just watched that one last week.  That's Penny and her son (about 6 y/o) is Liam and her husband is Edgar.  He is her enabler.  He goes to the store (have you seen her grocery list???) and remembers that she likes ice cream even though it wasn't on the list.  LOL  The list had all kinds of cake mixes, frostings, puddings, etc.....

I don't sympathize with these people.  As John said, at some time in their lives they were a little overweight.  Why didn't they come to the realization then, that they were headed for trouble.

I notice that all (if not most) of these overweight people claim to have been molested when they were young.  I have no explanation for that.  It's sad - but I don't get why they let it get so out of hand, they have friends and relatives who could have helped them.  Nobody cared then, but now they are all crying and sad........  Also, most of them have overweight enablers.

Re: 600 POUND LIFE JAMES' STORY

I've heard quite a few times that the folks who had trauma from being molested or raped ate to make themselves look unattractive so that nobody would want to hurt them like that again.

Makes sense, from that POV, I suppose but it's just a manifestation of the fact that they never dealt with the trauma so they are compensating.

Some men prefer larger women or they couldn't care less if a woman is over weight. I hope this show does a psychological work up on these patients - find out "what's eating Gilbert Grape". What would provoke someone to eat an entire sheet cake.

I do know that, of course.   But I was just stating the way it's seen by some who have had these things done to them.  It's just very basic, but it causes them to feel a couple of layers - 1)  Who cares how I look.  I don't; and 2) Maybe if I make myself unattractive (in the universally socially accepted meaning), then nobody will do this to me again.

Re: 600 POUND LIFE JAMES' STORY

My dad and I were watching and we were both infuriated at James and the woman. I didn't feel any pity for either of them. People jumped through hoops for him, gave him every opportunity in the world and he continued to be a whiny, petty, nasty, narcissistic brat.  We were thrilled that the doctor gave him his comeuppance.

Dr. Now had James' number the first time they skyped, before they even met in person.  He could tell by just talking to him and looking at him, that he was going to be a problem.

Re: 600 POUND LIFE JAMES' STORY

another thing I wonder is the bathroom situation-it's all well and good to have a catheter,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but what about #2...................the girlfriend had to wipe that nastiness-how did she do it-how do you turn him over....and you know it has to be a few times a day with all he eats-I don't get it at all.
