How in the world could children drive a car , be up at 4:30 in the morning, and end up dead? Where were the grandparents, do people not care for their children?

I'm not familiar with this story it sounds awful. Did you hear about the little boy maybe 5 or 7 can't remember who took his moms car to drive to buy himself a Lamborghini because his mom wouldn't buy him one? He was rewarded with a trip and a bunch of other stuff for it. No mention of any punishment. Thank God the boy was safe but he certainly did not learn a lesson about what no to do.

The grandmother was asleep, the boys got up, found her keys and took the car for a joyride.
Do you really think she ever expected that to happen?
She will suffer for this tragic accident for the rest of her life, I personally don't think she deserves to be judged or criticized.
Try to put yourself in her place.......

The NY papers are saying the crash happened at 4:20 p.m., so it was in the afternoon.

No matter what time of day who would think such young children would do such a thing. So many potentially tragic things can happen when raising children...nobody can be totally prepared.

@goldensrbest I had a neighbor who had a 4 yr. old that rivaled Houdini. That kid could get out no matter how many locks a door had.
They put the chain for the door at the top of the door. Kid got a chair and unhooked the chain, unlocked the door, boom he was out. At 4 yrs. old.
Unless the parents took turns sleeping and one played guard, he got out.
Luckily, they kept car keys well hidden. I could totally see him doing it.

Are grandparents and parents expected to have eyes on their kids 24 hours a day? So noted. . .

We also have a 'Houdini' child in our family!
My BIL & SIL (he's a college professor, she's a CASA attorney) have adopted several fetal alcohol syndrome children and one of them is an absolute genius in the art of 'escape'!
It's not always a simple, easy task!

What comes to my mind is children that probably lacked discipline and were allowed to do whatever they wanted!! There are devices that many of my friends installed on doors and even windows that set off an alarm when the doors or windows are opened! Parents should do whatever they can to protect them! That sounds like something children who are not spervised or well disciplined would do! Growing up I knew what was ok to do and stealing a car was not even a thought because it was my dad's car and not mine! The worst thing I ever did was crawl on top of the refrigerator and I got punished plenty for that! Many parents now just laugh at their "antics"! How tragic!

@KingstonsMom My neighbor's child got straight A's in school, 4.0 in college. The last I knew he was working in nanotechnology. He is well into his 30s now.
It is scary knowing how easy it is for them to "escape".
