A 344 year old tortoise has died. the turlte known by the name Alagba died after a short illness. He enjoyed the same food humans like. Including rice and beans. I love stories like this.....

Not sad story at all. No one and nothing lives forever. It's how we live that matters and this turtle love life and was loved and cared for and respected and I'm sure very happy. She will by her "family". I love this story.

Turtles like protein. A turtle comes into my Mom's backyard in the summer. she puts out fruit and water for him/her. once she had some lobster meat out there and he ate that too.
It's a box turtle who is very old who has survived in the woods and creek which fortunately have been undisturbed forever.

Seems there's an expert that disagrees on the turtle's actual age:
Tim Skelton, curator of reptiles at Bristol Zoo, said it would be "impossible" for Alagba to have lived that long.
'Unlikely in the extreme'
"A hundred years is a very good age," said Mr Skelton. "Giant tortoises can live up to 200, but that's a very rare exception."
Regardless - it's a really nice animal story for a change. A long life well cared for nonetheless.

Does anybody know why they live so long?
Amazing!
Although there is some disbelief about the over 300-year figure, there is no doubt these lovely animals can live a healthy long life--probably because they do not eat bacon and Klondike bars like I do!
