Our neighborhood was flooded by a flash flood and a sudden, unusually intense storm a few years ago. It was the most extraordinary thing. It was raining torrentially. I lay down to take a nap. A couple hours later I woke up. When I looked out the window there were cars floating past our house. We were not in a flood plain and there had never before been flooding in the neighborhood.

Flash floods are very common in the Hill Country. All the low places along their highways have flood water measuring poles to show how deep water is.
This instance was much worse than most, but not the worst ever.
We were having massive rainfalls a couple of months ago. Our meteorologists were constantly warning campers and homeowners by the rivers and in the hilly/mountainous areas to get out if it even started to rain because of the potential for dangerous rapid flooding. The combination of the rain coming down and the runoff from the hills could trap them before they could react.

My nephew was supposed to go to the boy's camp today. His friends go and one of their sisters was in the group of girls that got flooded. She was saved but her friends were not. It's beyond tragic. Even the girl who was saved has to deal with the whole experience and the loss of her friends. They've gone to that camp for years but I'm not sure they'll want to go back. Prayers for all these families.

That would help! I know EVERY escape route out of my neighborhood. (We've had a couple house fires around here -- burned to the ground)....

Hill Country - a unique and beautiful part of Texas -very rocky and hence the word"Hill", lots of hills, valleys, and gullies. Water washes quickly over the dry terrain.
Husband and I were camping on the Perdinales River near Fredericksburg several years ago when a flash flood came through without much warning. Dry as a bone one minute, quickly rising water next. There are warning signs up along that river because it does happen more than you would think.
