@SilleeMee wrote:Is there a reason why that list is singling out millennials?? Is that list suppose to be a comparison to some other generation(s)...like which one? I think it's only fair to ask.
ETA - A group of people put into a category for what they don't buy...?? That seems absurd to me.
@SilleeMee - I don't know about you but I'm kind of sick of the millennial bashings.
Someone said they don't do laundry either, somebody else takes care of them. None of the millennials I know.
They all have jobs, they can all pay bills, cook, clean, do laundry - etc...

I also don't use fabric softener and no one is doing my laundry but me.
A lot of vegetarians and all vegans also don't buy milk, meat, or mayonnaise, which is not the same as not cooking or eating out all the time.
Millennials range in age from 23-38 years old and most aren't living at home with their mommies. Not spending money on a house isn't the same as not spending money on housing. Many millenials are renters because they can't afford to buy house due to increased costs of home ownership, stagnant wages, and student loan debt. That's also part of the reason they aren't buying cars and instead take public transportation and ride shares.
Many of my coworkers are millenials. You have done them a great disservice by assuming that, as a group, they can't and don't take care of themselves. They're great colleagues with a fantastic work ethic.

@CelticCrafter .... Please don't take the "bashing" personally. Between your generation and mine (OK Boomer) they wouldn't have anything to complain about. At least we know they will remember our generation!

I have to giggle when someone bashes a younger generation.
I would say to that that person/group:
'If you truly believe that, more than likely YOUR generation caused it'.
When trying soooo hard to make someone else look bad,
it's flies back in their face.

@ValuSkr wrote:They're a smart lot; less is more! My sister said they're not buying furniture either; they prefer to rent - they're much more mobile if they don't have to cart furniture around.
"Less is more" for them in some areas, but "more is more" for them in others -- like tech and trendy foods. Gosh, do they love their gadgets (the better to take and send pics of their meals)!

I also have to giggle.....
So many are taking this list so LITERAL.
"My brother-in-law's cousin's sister's kids DO use fabric softener,
so this list can't possibly be right."
Lists like this are important. It gives retailers a vision of how to
adjust their product/s to succeed in the future. Those that don't
will die a slow death & complain that "it happened overnight."

@Johnnyeager wrote:So what we've learned thus far is that not every Millennial eschews everything on the list and not every Baby Boomer embraces everything on the list. That seems pretty logical.
It does. Unfortunately, no one reads a headline and says, "That sounds logical, I will click on it to read more," so we get news about things like this.
It's a huge bummer. I hate that so much news is driven by ratings, ads, and clicks per minute.

@vsm ... Seen very many pics of their meals? Their fascination is with "tech and food". My generation was with sports cars or 4-wheel drive vehicles and 8 tracks. So?

I guess the one that perplexes me is them not buying houses.
Does it mean they own condos or rent apartments?
Everything else, I can totally get.
Except I prefer to iron in high heals and drink corked wine.

Can just play sports or exercise on their own - yoga doesn't need a gym membership
7. Diamond engagement/wedding rings
Too expensive when just starting out - plus blood diamonds

Expensive compared to watching a stream a few months later
9. Warehouse club memberships, eg. Costco
Prefer fresh food so don't buy in bulk
10. Cereals
Not healthy enough
11. McDonalds, Burger King, etc.
See previous answer
12. Meat
See previous answer
13. Doorbells
Don't need to buy one if you aren't building a home
14. Napkins
Paper towels or microfiber instead
15. Automobiles
Public transport or Uber
16. Milk
Not seen as being as healthy as it used to be
17. Postcards
Post pictures and messages online instead
18. Stocks
Don't trust it not to crash
19. Cruises
Not adventurous enough, too boring
20. Hotels
Air B and B or stay at friends instead
21. Cable TV
Stream instead
22. Landline phones
Cell phone more versatile
