We take Natalie and her Mom and Dad to Disney World every year and we stay at the Grand Floridian. I know exactly where this happened. I personally wouldn't be on the beach at the Lagoon at night...Disney or not. It's Florida...they have gators.....
These poor parents will never get over this......

How horrific!

Horrible. Know this area well, myself.
On a side note: I used to live down the street from an aligator farm- escapees happened all the time.

Depending on the news outlet there are conflicting news reports. One said the child was wading in the water despite the no swimming signs and another said he was playing on the shore. I know alligators can come up on land, so how does Disney protect its guests? Should they put alligator signs up? Should they just close the little beach?

I just am thinking, that little boy and what he and family went through, and are going through now.

I'm not able to imagine how awful this family feels. I hope they have a conclusion soon. Not knowing something 100% must be excruciating. Florida is ful of gators and gators are predators. There is never not a risk ini and AROUND bodies of water.
.. I just realized this was at night. I know people go to Disney from all over, but don't most people know about things like sharks, gators, bears, etc? Nature does what nature does. I am so sorry the family may not get the result they want in this situation.

The news said the family is from Nebraska. Until we moved south, we had no idea how fast and dangerous alligators are, and that they are everywhere. It probably never crossed their mind.

How horrible. I think the boy was wading in the water. There are "no swimming" signs and lifeguards on duty but no signs warning of alligators. I wonder why Disney didn't post warnings. The way they control everything to the nth degree at their resorts, I'd have thought they'd have found a way to keep alligators out.

What a tragedy. Seems that these things happen before something is done about them. I don't think the child could have lived. I have to ask, where were the parents in all this? Just expecting things everywhere (no matter where you go) to be safe is irresponsible.

The parents were with the child.
I'm surprised there weren't warning signs about wildlife.
If you didn't know this lagoon had feeder water channels to the outside, one would just think it's a contained manmade mini-lake. Assumption would be no animals.
If the alligator was that aggressive, I would guess they would rush the sandy banks, as well. Anything could've happened.
So unfortunate.
I think it was just a Wrong Place/Wrong Time type of situation.
(Fr: cnn.com)
The attack occurred on a sandy waterfront area outside the hotel near the Seven Seas Lagoon on the property.
Witnesses said the family was on the beach, and the boy's sister was in a playpen about 20 to 30 yards from the water, according to Demings. The toddler was nearby, wading in the water.
Jeff Corwin, a noted national animal expert, said he was surprised this happened so close to a highly regulated area but noted there are millions of alligators in Florida. Disney has many thousand acres. An alligator could make its way, undetected through some swamp and marsh into a lagoon near where people congregate.
