I take my cell phone everywhere I go. My husband and I talk or text each other during the day. I hate it when I have forgotten to bring it with me. I check my emails while I am out. It's a way of life for me.

I do have a phone with me when I am out. I do not use the cell phone at home.
We have a land line.
The cell is for safety.

Cell phones are god send. They've traced and found people and have gotten people quickly to safety.
Always have it with me. You never know what could happen to you. I carry it in my bag. Picking up my smart phone is the last thing I do before leaving the house. On the way to work, I check my emails. I don't ususally drive, but take the university shuttle. I keep it on my desk during work, in case my husband or son contacts me. The first thing I do when I return home, is place it on my desk. It's always there within reach. I have never misplaced or lost my phone. We stll have our land line and don't intend to get rid of it.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone after an emergency say
"gosh I wish I hadn't had my cell phone with me".
I have heard the reverse said though.
I'm not a big phone person and really don't like cell phones, but I do use it and keep it charged and with me.
(actually I just am not a phone fan in general)

I got my cell in 2007. I never turned it on when I was going to or from work. It was a 25 minute ride and some days those 25 minutes was the only peace and quiet I had. I didn't even let my co-workers know I had one for 2 months. Didn't want to be that accessable. It was a law office we weren't transporting body parts for a transplant. Nothing was that urgent.
If the sky was going to fall someone would call the office when I walked in the front door or I'd find out when I got home. I figure what the heck did I do before cell phones.
I have a land line at the house. They certainly can be useful, but personally, I refuse to have one be that important to me that it's always with me. But that's just me.
I had a 30 something co-worker who came in door on her phone, was on it all day and on it as she left. I sat next to her and could hear her text all day, I finally told the boss that if she didn't stop I was going to throw the damned phone out on Main St. I added that I didn't care of her hand was still attached.

lots of GOOD reasons to HAVE a cell phone.....
emergencies while you are out, especially if you are in the car
locating someone at the airport
kids......this is the #1 reason why i began having a cell phone
elderly/ill parents who may need you......this is the #2 reason why i have a cell phone
safety while walking
directions while traveling/getting lost
ability to call 911 whenever or whereever you may be
i am sure others could add more, but these were off the top of my head.
since you were a legal secretary......
interestingly, my daughter, who is a law student, worked/interned for a law firm this past summer. she was issued a cell phone that she was required to use for work.....she was not allowed to use her own cell phone for business/legal matters.

Me too. Today i noticed my cell battery was very low so put it on charge. Left the house to grab a bite. At the burger place i realized i did not have my cell and almost thought i would hyperventilate before i could get home.

I was going to joke that I couldn't go six minutes without my phone. That's obviously an exaggeration, but the next time increment, six hours, is not. It gives me heart palpitations to even imagine going six weeks! I use my phone for so many things that the idea of using it for an emergency never really crossed my mind much until I read this thread and thought now that's a good idea! I could use my phone if I'm ever in some kind of trouble. Again, a slight exaggeration, and I did actually use it a few years ago when I came out of a store to a flat tire and called AAA.
I think if there was a way to have my phone surgically attached I'd be the first in line. As it is it's always either in a pocket or right by my side. Basically, we're inseparable, lol.

I'm not a big phone person in general but always take my cell when I leave the house -- both for emergencies, for identification if I'm in an accident, and to receive possible emergency texts or calls.
And since I'm not a big phone person, text comes in handy.

@sunshine45 We didn't have office issued phones. My co-worker was not using her phone for work. Every time the boss asked for something she hadn't gotten to it yet. It's hard to get your work done when your always horsing around on your phone.
She was there for 2 years. It was a long 24 months.
