Deaf baby’s first word is 'grandma' after being taught sign language by grandmother in adorable video

This is the heartwarming moment a deaf baby spoke her first word in sign language after being taught by her grandmother.

Nine-week-old Aria was filmed concentrating closely as she was tenderly shown the gesture for 'grandma'.

Her grandmother Pamela McMahon, 64, says to her in sign language: 'Can you sign Grandma? Oh, you're so funny! So funny!'   

In the touching video, she then repeats: 'Say Grandma. Can you sign Grandma?'

Pamela, from the US, then lifts up the baby's hands to help her understand how to make the gesture and she follows along.

The infant, who is sitting on her grandmother's lap, starts to babble with excitement as she moves her hands backwards and forwards. 

After a couple of tries the tot works out how to 'speak' with her hands as Pamela adds encouragingly: 'Yes, that's how you sign Grandma. Grandma, yes!'

Some parents teach their children a simplified form of sign language at a very early age so the youngsters can communicate their needs before they are able to speak.

It typically includes gestures for eating and drinking as well as others such as 'all done' and 'more'.

Aria is one of Pamela's five grandchildren - all of whom are deaf.

Her mother said that while the baby had watched sign language 'intently' in the past, she had never made any of the gestures herself.

The video has been viewed millions of times after it was posted on Facebook. One commenter said: 'I just couldn't quit smiling. Such a beautiful moment!'

What a challenge it would be to teach an infant sign language but they're like little sponges and just soak it up.  What a darling, sweet baby! 

They also teach deaf dogs sign language.
