I'd have to say Where The Crawdads Sing. That little girl just stole my heart.

I always have to give two answers--one for fiction, and the other for non-fiction.

My very favorite book of fiction I read this year was We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver.

My very favorte book of non-fiction was the biography of Mr. Rogers (The Good

Neighbor) by Maxwell King.

@insomniac2   I have 49 all-time favorite books on GR and We Need to Talk About Kevin is one.  So good to see this!

This Much Country

Where the Crawdads Sing

ETA:

I’ve read so many good ones this year. The best is This Tender Land by William Kent Kruger. I am so glad to see others here have said the same thing. Truly a modern classic. Elegant, compelling, beautiful. Characters that still live with me even though I finished it a few months ago. What a great story.

The four books that make up the Neopolitian Quartet by Elena Ferrante are my favorites I read this year. Her first book "My Brilliant Friend" was sereialized on HBO.

"An American Marriage" by Tayari Jones is on my best list as well. There are some lines from that book that I still hearken back to.

"Where'd You Go, Bernadette" by Maria Semple was another favorite because it was fun story. Need these once in awhile.

"The Alice Network" by Kate Quinn is also a standout to me from this past year.

This is so difficult to list just one book.  How can I have forgotten Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

The Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden.

For me it was How to Forget. It stayed with me for a long time.
