Usually one at a time, but I have been known to read two at a time. They have to be totally different books, for instance. I'm currently reading a book on money management and a thriller.

1 at a time. My sister told me she used to have 3 or 4 going at the same time. I thought this was kind of crazy, as I don't see how she kept everythng straight. Sometimes books have so many characters that I have to go back and forth for awhile to get them clear in my head -- so attempting this with multiple books would just drive me batty! I always have stacks of books to choose from. I never know what kind of book I will feel like and I want to be prepared!

When my home was busier, I used to read more nonfiction and several books at a time. Kept one in my car for running kids places and waiting. I even juggled several daily devotionals.
Now - One book at a time and over half the time audio book from library. It goes where I go. Fiction. I like to relate to characters and have interest in the subject. I stop listening/reading now if my interest doesn't kick in by chapter 4. I focus on one daily devotional at a time. I also donate books and no longer hold onto these in a cluttered bookcase.

When I was younger it was usually multiple books and multiple men.
Now I'm middle-aged it's only one book at a time and a neverending parade of plagues and maladies. 🤣
I do read short stories in between, always on the Kindle Fire* which I use for short stories.
*My brand-new Fire 10 is haunted and marking stories read that I haven't read and if I'm reading one and set it aside, marking it finished then not letting me finish ot/ Dear Amazon, like theShop (based on Amazon) in the dystopian satire Qualityland, is pushing back that their new Fire is neither glitchy nor defective and I therefore must be an idiot and/or delusional.

For the most part, I read one at a time. For longer books I might take a break in between.

I enjoy reading 1 book at a time. I always have a stack of books ready to grab the next in line once I finish the 1 I'm reading. Only time I may have multiple books being read are if some are easy travel/tourism books that I'm reading for research of a future trip.

Usually I have several at one time going. I stopped my "car" book reading when the days of waiting on my son at school or activities ceased. He does that now with my grandchildren.
I have my exercise bike book, my couch book, and the one at my office during lunch.
