@sunala wrote:I'm struggling through The Fifth Witness by Michael Connelly. It's the 4th book of a series of the Lincoln Lawyer books. I really enjoyed the first three, but this one is just dragging along.
Of course it could be my frame of mind this past week, but I've been working on it for that long and I'm not halfway through yet.
What do you all think? Should I pull the bookmark or continue? I could actually go either way.
Thanks!
I remember thinking it wasn't up to the author's usual standards but I finished it. Sometimes when I'm not sure about a book, I go into a fast-skim mode😊.
@tansy I love that "fast-skim mode!" It's not as easy to do with a Kindle as it with a book, but it still works. I fast-skimmed it and then read the ending. By that point, I didn't care who won the case. I guess I can't love every book!

@sunala How do you get that particular print on your posts? I can get color but not that print which I like?

I read James Patterson's latest Alex Cross book, "CROSS THE LINE." His books are hit or miss, but this was one of his better ones in recent years.

I just finished Who we were Before by Leah Mercer. It was one of the September 2016 selections on Kindle First.
I loved the way this book was written, going back and forth in time, in a good way (sometimes it's just confusing).
I loved the two main characters, and although the subject matter wasn't a happy topic, I couldn't put it down. I gave it four out of five stars.
I highly recommend it!

This month I read the first two Dana Stabenow's books in her Kate Shugak series. Really well done. Will enjoy the rest.

I finished the following audiobooks this month:
Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult - told by three narrators, one of which was the incredible Audra McDonald. I liked it; good story. I think any additional comments may stray into controversial territory, so I will leave it at that. I actually also listened to Shine before that, a short story about when Ruth first started at Dalton.
The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton - a 60 year old actress wants to understand a secret she and her mother share from 40+ years ago before the mother passes away. I admit I guessed the mystery mid way through, but it was still so interesting and the characters so likable, that I enjoyed it through the end. I hadn't realized until later that the author also wrote The Lake House, which I also enjoyed. Therefore, I just looked up other novels by this author and have downloaded The Forgotten Garden to listen to (will be listening to something else first).
I was on vacation earlier in the month and actually read books! One was new, but I decided to go through my kindle and read others that I just never got to.
The Girls by Emma Cline - I didn't really care for it; didn't like the narrator. I actually had the thought that it was written a bit...pretentious?
Doubt by C.E. Tobisman - think this was a free Kindle First book from a year or so ago. I liked the main character and looked for the next in the series (although I didn't see one yet).
Twisted by Andrew E. Kaufman - heard about this one some time ago on these boards. It was original, to me at least. I didn't guess the ending, but I did get some things right. Enjoyed it.

I just finished Commonwealth by Ann Patchett. Overall I enjoyed the book but there were portions that were a little strange.
"Commonwealth is the story of two broken families and the paths their lives take over the course of 40 years, through love and marriage, death and divorce, and a dark secret from childhood that lies underneath it all"-- Provided by publisher. "The acclaimed, bestselling author--winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Orange Prize--tells the enthralling story of how an unexpected romantic encounter irrevocably changes two families' lives. One Sunday afternoon in Southern California, Bert Cousins shows up at Franny Keating's christening party uninvited. Before evening falls, he has kissed Franny's mother, Beverly--thus setting in motion the dissolution of their marriages and the joining of two families. Spanning five decades, Commonwealth explores how this chance encounter reverberates through the lives of the four parents and six children involved. Spending summers together in Virginia, the Keating and Cousins children forge a lasting bond that is based on a shared disillusionment with their parents and the strange and genuine affection that grows up between them. When, in her twenties, Franny begins an affair with the legendary author Leon Posen and tells him about her family, the story of her siblings is no longer hers to control. Their childhood becomes the basis for his wildly successful book, ultimately forcing them to come to terms with their losses, their guilt, and the deeply loyal connection they feel for one another. Told with equal measures of humor and heartbreak, Commonwealth is a meditation on inspiration, interpretation, and the ownership of stories. It is a brilliant and tender tale of the far-reaching ties of love and responsibility that bind us together"-- Provided by publisher.
I also read Escape Clause by John Sandford. Always a fast read.
