Re: What are you Reading? July, 2016

Off to the library again this week, to pick up some new books.  Waiting for me are Daniel Silva's "THE BLACK WIDOW", Linda Castillo's 'AMONG THE WICKED", and Alexander McCall Smith's "CHANCE DEVELOPMENTS", a book of short stories.

I read Julian Fellowes' (the creator of Downton Abbey) new book, "BELGRAVIA."  I had mixed feelings about it.  Overall, it was just okay, I guess.  Very obvious plotline.

@smoky22 - when you finish the Spellman books, you might enjoy Lisa Lutz's stand-alone book, "HEADS YOU WIN."  I thought it was so clever and hilarious.  She wrote it with her ex-husband, each taking a chapter in turn.  Because of their "complicated" relationship, they kept changing up the plot on each other.  It was very funny.

Just finished The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. 5 stars IMO. Follows the lives of 2 sisters during World War II as France is invaded by the Nazis. Two totally different paths they took during all the trials & tribulations of that horrible time.

Oh my gosh, I read that, too, couldn't put it down!  Such a good book.  There is another one, The Cost of Courage that is in the same genre, but a true story.  Love these kinds of books.  Anymore that anyone can suggest?

@Patriot3 oh yes I've read several books about those times. I will find my list and post it. I think a while back we all posted our favorite books from WWII, but I can't remember where they're posted.

By the way, I just loved The Nightingale. Although I don't ordinarily read Kristen Hannah, The Nightingale brought me to tears, which is not easy to do.

I'll get back to you with that list, and then others can add their favorites as well.

@Patriot3 I found the thread about books on the Holocaust, and it's now on top. Check it out!

Thanks for the thread, but sorry, I don't know what you mean by it's now on the top Smiley Sad

@Patriot3 I found the thread I was referring to about holocaust books.

Since nobody posted on it in a while, it got buried down on the second page. I posted on it, which brought it back up to the current threads, so it should be towards the top of the first page, like around the same place this thread is located. Good luck and let me know when you find it. It's titled "Please Recommend Books on the Holocaust." Please let me know.

I found it!  Thanks so much......going to check out a lot of these on
Amazon!

Just finished B.A. Paris' Behind Closed Doors.  A British psychological fiction that I normally wouldn't read but got an ARC.  I have to admit I really enjoyed it and it could be non-fiction.

Onto The Family Tree by Susan Wiggs which is a Goodreads win.

lori, with all your reviews on books I've read, I'm wondering if you are reading about the Holocaust or gave it up? You said you had enough on your list for a year-did you start on it? Did you take a deep breath and dive in?

@Judaline, sorry, just saw your post.  This is what I read (all in a row, because when I read certain thingsI like to immerse myself):

"All the Light We Cannot See" (amazing)

"The Holocaust:  A History of the Jews of Europe During the Second World War" by Martin Gilbert (amazing, very detailed)

"They Thought They Were Free:  The Germans 1933-45" by Milton Mayer (very good)

"The Anatomy of the Nuremberg Trials:  A Personal Memoir" by Travis Telford (very detailed but he focused on a lot of legal stuff that didn't interest me; I wanted more on the defendants)

Pretty sure all of the above were recommendations from the thread I started asking for recs.  I am very, very grateful!

The Gilbert book was the best, most informative IMO.  Not an easy read but it admirably captures the scope of the Holocaust (only as it relates to the Jews).

I should probably re-read Elie Wiesel's books as I haven't read them since college but lately I haven't been reading at all.

@LoriLori Oh, my lori, you've made an impressive start. I like the novels during that era (Nightengale, etc) but too much detail isn't what I'm looking for and I just wondered what you were up to and if you started. I can't seem to sit still long enough to read these days-and when I do my mind wanders. I probably need a break. Carry on, old top! I mean old friend but I don't mean you're old, lol.

@Judaline, it's been months and I'm for now not reading anything else but there will come a time, and then it will be Wiesel plus "The Nightingale" and "Once We Were Brothers."   But not for a long time.

@LoriLori Those last two are winners. Throw in The Paris Architecht. Truthfully, I thought I wasn't going to like The Nightingale but I kept going and loved it. Another good one was Letters to the Lost which I learned of here. I loved it.'' Keep shining thru, just like you always do.........''

Re: What are you Reading? July, 2016

I' reading "Sweetbitter " a novel by  Stephanie Danler . It's a coming of age story, but also a look behind the scene at the inner workings of a restaurant  in Manhattan.Tess is a server, who portrays what it is like to be young in New York, and the wisdom that comes from experience. I always like to go behind the scene of a place that I'm unfamiliar with. It's a good read.

I will be reading Anne Tyler's Vinegar Girl this weekend. She is one of my favorite authors so I think it will be perfect for the hot weather the next few days.
