Re: What are you Reading? July, 2016

[ Edited ]

Just finished Susan Wiggs The Family Tree which was an ARC from Goodreads giveaways.  It was an enjoyable book.  A little far-fetched in a way that she was in a coma for one year and practically comes back unscathed in a way but liked the way her life turns out in VT recovering.

Going to read My Name Is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout.  I have a love/hate relationship w/her books.  I hated Olive Kitteridge but enjoyed her first 2 books.

Re: What are you Reading? July, 2016

I finally did it - i PTB on MY BRILLIANT FRIEND. I started and finished DID YOU EVER HAVE A FAMILY by Bill Clegg that I found in the June thread.

It was a fast read but I can't say I loved it. I felt something is amiss. I wanted to know what happened and yet as each chapter unfolds, I felt I was wating for the real story to start.

Anyway, onto K IS FOR KILLER by Sue Grafton. Tried and true staple. I needed to read something I know I will enjoy. Kinda going back to pizza after trying sea urchin.

Re: What are you Reading? July, 2016

I recently read The Year of the Runaways by Sunjeev Sahota about Indian youth trying to go to England to help support their families.  I found it an informative book if a little depressing.

Then on to Fool Me Once by Harlan Coben.  A fast read with a surprising ending.

@smoky22 While looking up something else, I saw a an Elvis Cole book titled, Lullaby Town. Have you read it? That's a new one on me!

@Judaline Lullaby Town is the 3rd in the Elvis Cole series and I read it so long ago now that I don't remember exactly what it was about.  I'm sure I liked it because it was pre nauseating girlfriend.  I don't know why I can't stand her but I can't.

Dimestore by Lee Smith. OMG, so good! She wrote Fair and Tender Ladies. One of my all-time favorites.

Currently reading Girl Waits With Gun by Amy Stewart. What fun!

@smoky22 I know just what you mean! I don't want my Private Eyes to have girlfriends-or wives-or lives! I just want them like they are-Elvis and Pike. Their girlfriends? I don't wanna know. I'm reading The Sentry right now and Pike is mooning over some woman. Please, Pike, give it a rest. You'll find her. He gets too involved with his 'cases'.

Re: What are you Reading? July, 2016

@Yahooey Hi. Well, let's see. It's about a PI in LA. He's kind of a smart talking guy, has a big heart, can be tough as nails when he needs to be. His name is Elvis Cole. Most books I've read, he wasn't involved with anyone, just Pike. Pike is something else. I'd say he's a tad above a Navy Seal in toughness. He doesn't talk much-kinda dull but I like him 'cause he's so tough. OK. The books-I have to tell you some are good and some are just plain losers. I think if you would start with #1 you'd have a pretty good idea of what you're in for. You'll know after that if you want to go on with them. I believe the first one was an award winner. There's always a crime, but never a murder that gives you chills. Not that kind of read. Others can elaborate.

Re: What are you Reading? July, 2016

@Judaline thanks

Reminds me of many murder mystery series that I have read in the past. There are always some variation of that. I like the Harlan Coben w/Myron Boliter as a sports agent that has a friend who is the muscle.

I'll look into the first book and thanks for the reco.

Re: What are you Reading? July, 2016

@Judaline that was a great overview of the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike  series.  You said it all!  The wisecracking that I so loved in the beginning started to fade with later books (I blame nauseating girlfriend, ha ha).
