Re: What Are You Reading --- November 2015

I finished Kissing The Gunner's Daughter (Ruth Rendell).  The title makes no sense to me.  I know the saying but could not relate it to the book.  I thought the main plot was fairly transparent, except for some details she provided at the end.  And yet, I found the story fascinating.  I loved how she interwove the murder mystery with Inspector Wexford's relationship with his daughters.  I am appreciating her skill as a writer more and more.

Now I'm reading The Penelopiad (Margaret Atwood) and The Darling Dahlias and the Eleven O'Clock Lady (Susan Wittig Albert).

Thanks Lori.  It's been a great 35 years w/the federal govt.  Glad to have served so long.  Won't miss the commute,  etc. but will miss the people as always.

Carol Lombard lived in my town.   There is still a little bed and breakfast here called the Lombard house.  ,

I just finished Picnic in Provence.  It was just OK.  Certainly no A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle.

Now I've started Rogue Lawyer , John Grisham's newest.

Started out a bit slow but I was also disappointed it was not her usual Italian family novel.   But it is really good for being about Clark, Young, and Hollywood.  Should finish up tonight.  She is such a good writer.

Is this true?

Thanks. I know Loretta Young didn't tell anyone for a long time-Gable didn't know about it, right?

I was disappointed at first when I realized this was not her usual book.  But once I got into I could not put it down.  I will be anxious for her next Italian Family novel more than ever now.

Have you read The Winds of War? My favorite Wouk book. It has a revered place on my book shelf. There was a sequel which was just OK.

@Judaline, I haven't read The Winds of War yet, but it's on my TO READ RSN ("Real Soon Now") shelf.  Thanks for sharing your opinions of both books.

@pateacher, thanks for mentioning The Secret Chord.  Several people mentioned it later, but you were the first and led me to seek it out.  I assume the title came from the song Hallelujah, but I haven't seen anything to confirm that.  I'm a little disappointed in the book, and the author's way of writing kind of puts the characters off at a distance for me and has made it hard to get emotionally invested in them.  But her descriptions of David's harp playing and his singing are the best part of the book so far.  I'm about halfway through it and still have to keep mentally adjusting to her using the transliterated versions of people and place names instead of the more familiar anglicized versions.  The dislocation is especially wrenching after just finishing Herman Wouk's The Hope and The Glory.

@Janey2, I'm not familiar with Ronald Balson, but I'll look up Saving Sophie.  Thanks for the recommendation.

Finished Verbena by Nanci Kincaid.  Not the best book.  Set in AL and I can't believe that Southern people speak such bad English.

Onto Tracy McArdle's Confessions Of A Nervous Shiksa.
