Re: What Are You Reading --- November 2015

Just finished THE PRETTIEST ONE: A THRILLER.  Well I should learn to PTB - I was already into it before it got gorey and grisly so I had to finish it to see how it ended.  A waste of my time.  The synopsis sounded so good - a girl who wakes up with no memory with blood on her clothes and a gun in her hand - silly me, I should have known when blood was involved at the outset.  Oh well, on to BETTER books - please let me choose more wisely!

Re: What Are You Reading --- November 2015

I read 3 new mysteries this week, and all of them were good. First was Sofie Kelly's "FAUX PAW", the latest in her cute Magical Cats cozy mystery series. Next was Laura Child's "PARCHMENT AND OLD LACE", the latest in her New Orleans series. Last was "THE PROMISE" by Robert Crais, which is the sequel to his excellent book, "SUSPECT". I enjoyed all of these books. I am looking forward to Tuesday, when I can pick up two new books from my library: "TRICKY 22" by Janet Evanovich and "ALL DRESSED IN WHITE" by Mary Higgins Clark.

Re: What Are You Reading --- November 2015

At any given time I am reading several books. My methods of reading vary from hard copy books, kindle readers and audio books. I will average three books a week. I have always honored an eclectic reading style, with a mix of fiction and nonfiction, and will research the book somewhat prior to investing myself into it. This process has served me well, I'm never without an interesting book and have found that reading has taken me to far away lands not bound to parameters such as time and space.

To start with, this month I have already read many, but will only mention a few standouts:

The Quartet: Orchestrating the Second American Revolution, 1783-1789
by Joseph J. Ellis
It is about the process of what the founding fathers went through to creat the United States of America. Enlightening.

Another one called
Eventide
by Kent Haruf, George Hearn
It is the second in a series written by Kent Haruf where he takes a town and shows us characters of everyday ordinary that makes for an engrossing, profoundly moving novel rich in the wisdom, humor, and humanity for which Kent Haruf is justly acclaimed.

I also read a fascinating book, The Wright Brothers by David McCullough. A new book about brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright.

Another, Inside the O'Briens
by Lisa Genova was about Huntington Disease and how it's diagnoses affected a family.

Currently, am reading Mountains Beyond Mountain by Tracy Kidder. This powerful and inspiring new book shows how one person can make a difference, as Kidder tells the true story of a gifted man (Dr. Paul Farmer) who is in love with the world and has set out to do all he can to cure it. It caused me to stop and think about things going on in medicine on a global scale. I work in medicine now at a major teaching hospital. This book challenges you to think globally and to know what is happening medically in Haiti and Peru, has an effect on us all.

Just a sample of my November. I really enjoy reading others contributions that they care to share here.

Re: What Are You Reading --- November 2015

PTB on Tracy McArdle's Confessions of a Nervous Shiksa.  Wasn't what I  thought it would be.  Bad chick lit. What also bothered me was that the cover had her engagement ring on her right hand?  I guess that was a message that she didn't end up w/the guy which was obvious from the beginning of the book.

Onto Sorority by Sharon Schwartz.  An oldie from the 80s that I've had on my shelf for years.  Very small print too.  Oy.

I will drop everything when my Tricky Twenty Two comes in. Everything else will just have to wait. It's only a two day book so no problem. I am happy just thinking about it.

Has anyone read Suspect by Robert Crais? It sound soooo good. But before I order it, I need to know if the dog dies. Because if the dog dies, it's no dice. I won't read it. Thanks to anyone who knows. And that's really ALL I want to know about the book.

Judaline, the dog does NOT die in the excellent book, "SUSPECT". Her adventures continue in the new book, "THE PROMISE" too.

@dawg lover and @JudalineThanks to both of you for recommending Suspect.  I've put it on hold.

Re: What Are You Reading --- November 2015

I finished Simisola (Inspector Wexford) and found it complex and compelling.  Once I started this, I put all my other books aside to read this one, something I rarely do.  The mystery is almost secondary to her characters and her social commentary.  I enjoyed this book immensely.
