Reading The Whisper Network, it's Reece's book club pick of the month. But I'm really having trouble getting into it and may have to give it up. Just not that good to me!

just read. Bookshop by the Shore by Jenny Colgan

quick and predictable read but I really enjoyed, it's for those who like Pilcher and Katie Fforde .

For some reason I love this genre

My heart just broke for that little girl but she was such a survivor.

Spoiler
What Tate found at the end of the book was a shock to me.  She did what she had to do and I'm sure it was partly to seek revenge for her mother and everything she went through.  Loved the book!

Please edit your post to either put in a spoiler box (as I did) or take out the spoilers of the ending..  I'm' sure you meant no harm but it continues to top the bestseller lists and there are many people who haven't read it yet.

I just started reading A Reliable Wife and I’m shaking me head. I don’t care for the characters at all. Trying to decide if I bail, skim, or keep going and hope it gets better?📚🤷‍♀️ @pateacher @LoriLori @Judaline

I am not focused on "liking" characters when I read.  I enjoy a good plot and an unreliable narrator. To each his/her own, I guess!

I agree.  I love Nabokov and generally the worst people in his books are the best characters.  This is one of very few where I found no redeeming qualitiies and within the plot in that atmosphere of venom it was too much.

@LoriLori  I read your review on Amazon (excellent) and marked it helpful.  As usual, you put a lot of thought into it.  I'm sure it will inspire a lot of readers (including me) to read the book.  Great job!

Thank you so much, @smoky22 .  Remember the ad jingle (whether from real time or Mad Men) "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke?"  I'd like to buy the world a copy of The Honey Bus.

In other news

How Not to Die Alone by Richard Roper

turns out to actually be like Eleanor Oliphant, the one comparison that isn't hype.

His job involves people who die alone, trying to track down family, arranging funerals, he's good-hearted and so he even goes to them.  THis is a real job in the U.K.

He's socially awkward and isolated like Eleanor. lives alone and lonely in a rundown apartment.  In a great scene I won't spoil during the job interview he tells the boss he has a wife, two  kids, names and ages.  Big house. A great family.   Over the years he's asked about them quite a bit....

...and then a new woman starts work there and.he's falling for her but there's that big old lie.

It really IS like Eleanor Oliphant!  It's sad and also funny and well-written.

As of now strongly recommend it.  Great setup, great so far.  Little bit of the eff word....I'll write a short post when I finish. I think I'll love it.

Re: What Are You Reading? July, 2019

I have been enjoying my quiet summer of reading! It seems like I am doing a mix of new discoveries and re-reads. I am super happy with this comfy combo!

This week I read:

The Duke and I by Julia Quinn - this is a re-read of a beloved historical romance. I am getting ready for the Bridgertons series coming soon!

The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn - a re-read of book 2 in the Bridgertons series.

The Broken Girls by Simone St. James - a spooky dual timeline mystery. It was a fine read, but the storyline didn't seem very original. I totally feel like I have read this book (or something like it) before.

I also finished my re-listen of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by JK Rowling.

@jackthebear- I read one of Jenny Colgan's books about the library on wheels, and I enjoyed it a lot. I intend to read all her books. It made me very happy!

Pateacher, I was not impressed with Goolrick's A Reliable Wife, so I'll probably not read anything else by him.

(I do change my mind sometimes, though!)

@insomniac2  - What a waste of time A Reliable Wife was! But, I did enjoy his second book (although  I can't remember the title.)
