Re: WHAT ARE YOU READING? MAY 2020

I'm re-reading (for about the 6th time), Life Among the Lutherans, a collection of short stories by Garrison Keillor.  Some of the stories literally make me laugh until I cry.  It's a great pick-me-up!

Re: WHAT ARE YOU READING? MAY 2020

Reading a birthday present from my daughter, "Murder at Madingley Grange" by Caroline Graham, the author of the series that led to TV's Midsommers Murders. Just started it but as it's an English murder mystery ala Agatha Cristie I think I'll enjoy it.

Also reading The A List by J A Jance --  an Ali Reynolds thriller  --  and A Column of Fire by Ken Folett, both are good reads.

I am binge reading the NATCHEZ BURNING trilogy by one of my all-time favorite authors, GREG ILES.  He is such a masterful author; this trilogy is 600+ pages per book. Perfect to make the time go by!

THE BOOK OF LOST FRIENDS by Lisa Wingate

This has become one of my favorite books!  I found it hard to settle down and read with everything going on around us, but once into this book, I was hooked and hated to see the book end.  I loved the descriptive way the author wrote, plus the story line was so compelling.  This is a historical novel with 2 stories woven into one book.  One setting is in 1987, the slaves trying to find their way with new found freedoms, facing hardships and a different world.  The other setting is 1975 with a new school teacher trying to settle into a new community with students who have little upbringing and are struggling.  These 2 stories intertwine and come together toward the end of the book.  I hated to see this book end.  So well written and so gripping!

The Sun Down Motel by Simone St James

It's a ghost story and I am about 1/2 of the way through.  So far, pretty good!

@kristina1- I have that book on my Kindle. Maybe I'll give it a try. I'm still not doing well in the reading department but I'm trying. I did complete The Redhead by the Side of the Road, and although I didn't think it measured up to Anne Tyler's other books, it was pretty good. I also completed A Woman Walks into a Bar, an autobiography by Rachel Dratch, the actress from Saturday Night Live. I've always liked her and the book was good. At least I finished it.

Not sure what's next on the agenda.

Nobody Will Tell You This But Me by Bess Kalb (4.75 Stars)

Tender, sweet, funny and uniquelyl-written memoir makes everything new and fresh between generations of women. Light-hearted and full of humor, this was impossible to put down! Reminded me of my grandmother, mother and me . . . and the conversations we sometimes had. But more often, the love and wisdom shared.

The Bar Harbor Retirement Home for Famous Writers (and their muses): A Novel by Terri Lynne DeFino.

This is an excellent novel about bestselling novelists in their twilight years and how they do  "team writing" of one last novel together. The story alternates between the book they're writing and their story of writing. Several good mysteries that slowly unravel and keep you guessing. Explores the dark and bright corners of the human heart.

@kristina1,

I belong to Book Browse and every once in a while I have the option to get books before they are released.  We read and review it on the website.

Sun Down Motel was the book I read and reviewed a few months ago.  Would like to see it as a movie or on Netflix.  Look forward to reading what you think when you are done with it.

Has anyone gotten books from hoopla?  I downloaded it the other day on my ipad.  Trying to get back into reading.  You can download up to 4 books per month and you have, I think, 21 days to read it.  I downloaded The Operator.  So far so good.

I just finished Small Blessings by Martha Woodroof. I enjoyed it, hard to explain, but it was good!
