The Gray House by Mariam Petrosyan

I am currently reading this book. It is a Russian novel, translated by Yuri Machkasov.

It is long - 736 pages. And it is weird. It concerns a bizarre institution of sorts where disabled children are sent to live. There are different heirarchies within the house, each has its own peculiarities. All kinds of inappropriate behavior you would not expect in a ward setting goes on - smoking, drinking, roaming about, etc. The various groups engage in the weirdest activities - one group walks around holding potted plants, for example.

I keep wondering if I can read a book this long, which is all centered around the one theme and sometimes veers off into stream of consciousness, strange writing styles. But then there is a twist or a situation and I keep reading.

I've never experienced anything like it. Has anyone here read it?
