I didn't really understand the ending. Was her mother only in her imagination, or were the phone calls from her?
Her mother was long dead. You realized that she was hallucinating her mothers voice. Every night she would "talk" to her mother. Eleanor pretended she was "alright". She was blocking out the fire that killed her little sister. In her mind, her mother was at least "normal" so she would talk to her. She couldn't face the idea of a mother wanting to kill her children. I ended up loving the book. It was so sad. If you're going to read the book, stick with it.

I don't think I missed anything by giving up on "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine." The end sounds depressing. The book was promoted by some reviewers as being "uplifting and funny." I couldn't figure out that description.
Goodreads gave the book over 4 stars so it must have been me.

The ending was quite hopeful. It started out as funny & uplifting. Gradually you realize there was something wrong with the character. You didn't realize the mental illness of the main character till the end. But it pushed her one step in the right direction. I read another book like this. About 2 elderly sisters starting out to drive an old car on Route 66 from Chicago to L.A. One sister that could drive was blind. The other couldn't drive, but she was the navigator. It was light hearted and funny. But about half way through...the book suddenly changed direction. You gradually realized one of the sisters had killed her husband. The book ended on a different note. Another example of a book changing direction in the middle was "John Dollar" starting as a romantic voyage by sea, ending in a horror story. But the book was quite affective!
