Re: STARTLING BIOGRAPHY OF POET EMILY DICKINSON

Absolutely, @Zernia Rose .   Wow, I hadn't thought of the Fabian Society in years-- another fascinating phenomenon.

@Oznell - I have never enjoyed reading poetry.  However, now I want to read some of Emily Dickinson's poetry and the book you reviewed.

[ Edited ]

Am thrilled, @JudyL .    Here's a taste of a fragment to start you off,  "A Narrow Fellow in the Grass".    It has her characteristic quick shifts in imagery, the capitalizations and dashes you see in her work.   I think that very last line is astonishing, to have been written in the 19th century--

It starts:

A narrow Fellow in the Grass
Occasionally rides –
You may have met Him – did you not
His notice sudden is

And ends--

Without a tighter breathing
And Zero at the Bone –

Another superb one is the one that starts,  "Since I could not stop for Death,  He kindly stopped for me",   (or words very close to that).   I'd post it, but it might be a little eerie to start off with in the a.m....

@Oznell - Thank you for your post.  So sweet of you to write all of that.  Next time I'm at the library, I'm going to look for a book of her poetry.

Thank you, @Oznell

This one is one of my favorites too:

Some keep the Sabbath going to Church –
I keep it, staying at Home –
With a Bobolink for a Chorister –
And an Orchard, for a Dome –

Some keep the Sabbath in Surplice –
I, just wear my Wings –
And instead of tolling the Bell, for Church,
Our little Sexton – sings.

God preaches, a noted Clergyman –
And the sermon is never long,
So instead of getting to Heaven, at last –
I’m going, all along.
