Re: SEPTEMBER 2023 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

I read two more books in the People I Want to Punch in the Throat series by Jen Mann.

I just finished Holly by Stephen King yesterday. I must say he is a master storyteller. He is one of the few authors who can command my attention immediately.

Re: SEPTEMBER 2023 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

"Read" a few since I've last been here - and liked them all.  I recently listened to the following Audibles:

HAPPINESS FALLS by Angie Kim.  I really liked her debut novel and I like this one as well. I enjoyed the narrator, so I wonder if it would read a little drier as it does include some scholarly jargon discussing how to measure happiness.  Apparently the book includes footnotes, that, as I was listening, were automatically included.  I didn't mind the detours they sometimes took.

MOTHER-DAUGHTER MURDER NIGHT by Nina Simon.  Reese's monthly pick reads like a Hallmark Movies and Mystery movie and I was not mad about it. Would continue reading if this becomes a series.

THE SEPTEMBER HOUSE by Carissa Orlando.  The description got me with it's promise of black humor, and that it had. Margaret loved her new house and nothing was going to get her to leave, no matter how much blood flowed from its walls each September! Not for the sqeamish.  I thought it may have gone a little long and the ending was...well, there's not many ways to end the book and this was maybe better than some.  Overall, I enjoyed the book. And I did laugh in places!

I'm currently listening to Jessica Knoll's latest and, so far, am really enjoying that one too. I'm basically doing everything BUT listening to my book club books.

Re: SEPTEMBER 2023 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

I read a really good thriller, Freida McFadden’s new book, THE CO-WORKER. Lots of twists and turns. I’m currently reading Richard Osman’s latest entry in the Thursday Murder Club series, THE LAST DEVIL TO DIE. It’s funny and sad and well-written.

Today I start my new book by Ken Follett. THE ARMOR OF LIGHT. At over 700 pages I may not be around for a while 😆

Re: SEPTEMBER 2023 READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

[ Edited ]

Night Will Find You by Julia Heaberlin.  It features a reluctant psychic (who is also an astrophysicist), a skeptical detective, and a missing girl.  I loved Ms Heaberlin's last book, We Are All The Same in the Dark, and I loved this one.  It's very tense and and atmospheric.

The Housekeepers by Alex Hay.  Oceans 11 meets Downton Abbey.  The premise of the book sounded much better than the execution.  As revenge (for various reasons) the  downstairs ladies plan a heist against the upstairs mistress.  It was too slow moving for me.

Holly by Stephen King.  I liked it.  I didn't love it.  A little too much like Criminal Minds.  King is a master storyteller, though.

@maisiebrook
I just finished The Forest of Vanishing Stars by Kristin Harmel, also WW II historical fiction, but based on real life events. At the end of the story, she talks about the research she did. Just fascinating. I now have a list of her books to read, including those you just mentioned. Really looking forward to more of her work.

@smoky22 , thanks for the reviews of books by Julia Heaberlin.  On the list.

I agree with you about Holly.  Good, not great.  I like great by Stephen King.
